S Aare, S Crimsonette, S Pacific Country Cousins, S. Rubra Ash, S. Emerald Evergreen, S Commander Haye all can get to 8". Sources are easy for most of them, Aare is from Edelweiss. I think SMg has most of them. Growing conditions can have a big effect on size. If you want large ones, transplant a young rosette to a private spot. Semps appear to communicate with each other when growing in a clump to keep the sizes down.

J. heuffelii Fandango is the largest heuffelii I've run into. Easily 8" or better (that planter is 8" wide shortest dimension)

No but I'm thinking of starting...kidding, I'm recently "obsessed" Rolling on the floor laughing And so like most new converts I am very "passionate" and just in a year have collected 155 (and I just placed another order for 4 more) Lovey dubby I've filled my "veggie" beds, except for a small spot for lettuce, which I may have to transplant into some other spot, to make room for a couple more semps! S. 'Red Lion', S. 'Oley', S. 'Red Rum', S. 'Purdy's Big Red', heuffelii 'Apache', heuffelii 'Elmo's Fire', are some other large ones.
I'll have to look out in the beds to see what others are at least 8" or more across. There are a number of them.

My 'Silver King' is also large, about 7inches and growing! But I don't know how easy it would be to find this type. There is another 'Silver king' which isn't smooth and large like this one.
Here is yesterday's photo (with too much sun, but you get an idea. (I was taking the photo to see if its coning, which hooray, it isn't!)
Thumb of 2013-06-05/gg5/b8c494
this photo shows more clearly that there is no coning, yet anyway! And there are chicks beginning! The white speckley stuff about mid way up the plant at the base of the leaf, is offsets coming in!! Hurray!

I think so?? Don't know though? Chris?? (Vicky, Chris is in WI, and is either Z5 or 4?) The one thing these gals of mine seem to like is chicken grit! Lynn kept writing about it, and I was hesitant, and then finally tried it, and I just keep going back for more! I'm using it for all my succulents and the seem to respond to it well! I use the smallest kind (so its actually called "Chick grit" or #1)
My semps went from looking mediocre to "glowing"! within a week or so after top dressing with this stuff!! Amazing Thumbs up

Should I use cactus soil too? Right now they're in Miracle Grow Potting Soil.
How much grit do you add to the soil?
I actually have chick grit.

How cute are they!!!
Your soil is fine! If you feel like mixing some chick grit in you can, I usually use 1/5 to 1/4 (If its a quart, than I use less than a pint of chick grit - but I don't measure, I just go by the look/feel) then as a top dressing I use more than an inch (about 2 inches) so that the weeds stay under control! You'll definitely notice a difference! They'll begin to "pop" Lovey dubby your geese!

Vicky, back in March ATP has a Sempervivum Week which included a bunch of articles on sempervivum. Here is one that has some potting mix recipes from different people: http://garden.org/ideas/view/g... If you do a search for "sempervivum" at the top of the home page, it will bring up all the articles.

I love your geese too! Lovey dubby

There was just a correction made for Mt. Usher as there was an imposter on the database. So I'm wondering about the mention of two different Silver Kings. I have it and want to make sure it's the real thing. Are there really two different semps with that name? Shrug!

I went to my Lowes and they only had generic semps.
I went back to the other place where they had named semps and got 4 more.
I'm all done buying for the year.
I wanted to buy more but I think I've spent well over $500. on plants and garden supplies so far this spring and have to stop. Blinking

Greg's is the correct 'Silver King'. Mine is an imposter that was being sold about 4 years ago.
Greg, you need to add that wonderful photo to the database. Hurray!

So if any of you have a fuzzy version of 'Silver King', it is incorrect.

Patty, thank you for bringing 'Silver King' up, I made sure all the wrong entries have been removed from the database. Thumbs up

Awesome geese Vicky, what kind are they? They make such good alarm systems. Big Grin
