I saw these gorgeous things at a local nursery today. Not one of my usual stops so that might be why I have not seen them before. They all have White Flower Farm labels as the grower.

It has been years since I had Lupines in my garden but I couldn't pass these up. They have such beautiful colors. I bought POPSICKLE RED but they had lots of colors and they all started with the word Popsickle.

The Description said these are dense and stocky with flowers tightly packed along thick upright stems. 13-16 inches tall. Flowers from June until mid July. Of course, they are starting to flower now.

You just had to see the colors, the colors were so vivid and striking. Guess you figgured out I really liked the striking colors LOL!!!!

I knew when I saw them I had just the perfect spot. I bought two and they are already planted. Will post pics later.

It really was a yucky day with rain and drizzel all day. No gardening. So I couldn't stand it and went out to the same nursery that I got my lupines from and bought eight more.

Here are the eight pots sitting all together on my driveway after I unloaded the car. I just think these things are so gorgous. Going to be making a lupine mini meadow in an area in the font yard right off the annual garden and little tree garden. I will have to post after I plant because there is no way I can describle what I have in mind.

Love those rich jewel tones! I understand Lupines are short lived perennials, that will reliably reseed and make themselves a permanent presence in the garden if they're happy. Have you grown them before? Wondering if you've found that to be the case with them?

No, they are new this year. I had some wild ones I dug from a meadow going to be bulldozed for condos 20 years ago. I had for years, don't remember why they finially died out.

Here they are all planted.

Stunning! Just remember to let a few go to seed, and I would bet you'll have them around for a long time.

These are supposed to be perrenial, I guess I will find out next spring. They are bred to be better heat tolerant and so forth than the original wild ones. So we will see how they do.

I just ordered (on line) the GOVERNOR selection of Russel hybreds, which is a blue and white. I saw it and flipped, thought it was lovely. I have just the spot.

Now the thing that I think will be extra great is that the short new hybrids bloom about two weeks earlier than the Russels. So if you have both you can really extend your bloom time.

Rita I don't dare let my dh see those wonderful pictures. He's from upstate NY and really wants to have lupines here. Sad to say that it gets way to hot for them though. We were successful 1 year getting them to bloom from wintersown seeds, but so far that success hasn't been repeated. Your new plants are amazing in that setting. Enjoy them:))

Bev, ok, I am in upstate NY, but this might help. After my lupines go to seed, we mow them off. That helps with the grass problem and assorted other weeds, and it gives the plants a break. They come back up slowly and then over-winter much smaller than if we'd left them. I have pictures of this year's batch that I'll get downloaded soo.

I'd love to see your pics Kathleen. I'm afraid that lupines don't get to the flowering stage here before they completely burn up. I wish that someone could come up with a heat tolerant lupine for the south...Maybe someday.

I haven't heard of anyone down south that was sucessful with the lupines. I am only thinking that they would do well here on Long Island because #1 - I want them too and #2 - I had seem them growing wild in fields here many years ago. The fields are long gone, full of condos.

WOW and double wow. Those lupines are glorious. Are those the Russel Hybreds? Can't tell how tall the bloom spikes are really from the pictures.

We started out with some old mostly blue and purple lupines that had been left to themselves down in the grass. I threw a packet of seed that someone had sent me in the plot a couple of years after we got some of the grass and most of the goldenrod down to where you could actually see the lupines. A couple of years later, we had some pink ones and a few white. A couple of years after that, we had some with mixed colour florets. I'm not sure where the reds and salmons came from, but they showed up four or five years ago. We let the seed ripen before we mow them down and every year is a surprise. The Amish ladies call it my 'wild' lupine patch. Of course, to them, anything not weeded and mulched within an inch of its life is 'wild'. I think they probably shake their heads about my yard - lots of 'wild'!
