Oh, that's nice! Does it have a name? Sigh, my vines aren't doing well this year.

It doesn't have a name. I'll have to work on that.

Why aren't your plants doing well?

I had to start another crop of Blue Silk, something weird happened to my first couple of plants, they're stuck in park, pygmy sized.

Not sure. The weather has been a little weird, going from cold to hot then back to cold and now it's warming up again. Only things that look even remotely like growing are the I. purpureas, and even they don't look all that great. However, there are LOTS of little volunteer seedlings popping up in last year's beds, so I may at least have a few of those. About half the Yoi No Tsuki's have stalled like you said, but the Star of India's may do ok. I risked putting one outdoors yesterday and so far, so good!

Here is another photo of the same flower, taken with my ancient Nikon D70 using a manual focus lens. It is more capable than the cellphone camera.

Most of my MG's are a month late in size. We had such a cool Spring and the ground wasn't really warming up. My Blue Silks are comatose too .. growing very slowly even though I feed them once a week. Also, because we've had so much rain, a lot of the buds are dropping off. About the only thing blooming consistently is the Kanoko but it's not climbing and being more of a bush than a vine.

This is Fujishibori and it's been in the ground over 2 months now .. as you can see it's not growing either!

I'm trying something new this year, using the Masonry Ladders for growing my MG's ..

I really like your garden design. It's a very nice use of space.

My plant that made the pink flower is an indoors one. I have also had a slow start to the season. I hope your plants resume good growth one good weather returns.

Thanks .. I designed it this passed winter and it came out exactly as I imagined it - I was trying to figure out a way to grow everything close together with easy access since I was revisiting the whole Double Blue Picotee X Minibar Rose Saga (DBP X MBR) .. I want to do some back crossing on those and also see if I can get a Red Picotee to double consistently since I have developed a strain of the DBP x MBR that doubles consistently (and sometimes outrageously) and looks almost pure DBP as well as back cross the Platycodon Blue X Fujishibori - wanting to get some spots going ..

This flower opened up today. It is Japanese Bindweed (Calystegia pubescens 'Tenshi Botan').

Gosh I love those doubles! Those are getting into the realm of not even looking like MG's.

I know what you mean. There is a person on Gardenweb who posted photos of their plant and it looks just like a rose.

Have you ever noticed a fragrance? Every once in awhile, if I sniff at the right time I'll notice a rather evanescent lemony fragrance. Best time is around 9am when the sun starts to hit the flowers. The Yojiro's seem to produce the strongest scents.

I only sensed fragrance from Ipomoea albivenia and I. lindheimeri. I'll have to whiff my nil flowers now that you bring it up.

I will be growing this Japanese-developed mutant morning glory again this year. It has no varietal name. It was called a windmill flower with crepe leaf trait. The windmill forms from genetic mutation which makes little flags out of the anthers. Coupled with that mutation is the reverse tube. I got the seeds on eBay.

Pretty, I always thought the "little flags" were the flowers attempts at doubling - as in the doubling gene was only partially turned on. The mutant Double Blue Picotee does that all the time.

All I know is what was on the seed packet provided by the Japanese seed vendor and my personal observations that there were no viable pollen-producing anthers on the flowers that made the small windmill-flag-like structures. I saw no doubling of the limb of the flower. The actual item description for the eBay listing had no detailed description due to the English language barrier, I suspect.

Your plant might be controlled by different genes. I really don't know for sure.

Ron once told me to always check those modified stamens and occasionally you will find viable pollen on them. I know I have occasionally on the Fujishibori. I lightened the contrast on the 2nd picture for detail.

Here is one that has a deep dark pink that goes nicely with the yellow variegated leaves. It has no variety name. Enjoy!
