I'd like to add this to the DB, but since there is no "general" listing for purslane I need to know which one it is. Anyone know?

It is an ornamental purslane. So beautiful! AKA "purslane grandiflora"

Hi, I'm thrilled to find a group about purslane! It's one of my fav edible weeds!

I've been eating purslane for many years. But this year, I've got this one popping up. You can see the common wild purslane in the right side of the pic - it looks a bit darker. The main plant has slightly pointy leaves and orange flowers instead of yellow.

Also, the stalks are slightly ridged, whereas the wild purslane stalks are smoother and rounder.

Is this another variety of purslane, or another plant entirely? I am mainly interested in its nutritional value so don't much care if it doesn't taste as good. I just want to make sure it isn't a poisonous lookalike before I start chomping away on it!

Thanks!

I'm not sure but hopefully Becky will be along to help you with the ID. Good move on not eating until you're sure!

It looks different from any purslane I have seen with the leaves like that. Mutant?

The thread "Purslane: the Weed variety" in Purslane and Portulaca forum
This is spurge.

But your's doesn't look like that.

Do you have a reliable nursery who can ID it?

I would at first glace think it is purslane too. Are all the leaves pointed? The stalk is the main reason I wonder also.

Hi there, I hope you don't mind if I join in and ask if this is P. umbracticola? I think it's a moss rose but not sure.

Okay, thank you for your help Ginger. I was looking around in the database but didn't see any that had fan-like leaves around the flowers like mine. I'll go take a better look. Smiling

Can you take another pic with some object in it for scale?

Hi Tiffany, I sure can but will have to do it in the morning when the flowers open back up - they close in the afternoon and then reopen in the morning, if that helps.

Here's a pic I just took.

This is so different from any I have seen before. And I love it a whole lot!!!!!

Christine, it is indeed Portulaca pilosa like Ginger noted. Would you share it with our data base or let me do it for you?

I took a pic of the bloom a bit ago and added a penny for scale.
There's some sort of tiny pollinator on the bloom too. Smiling

This looks more like Portulaca amilis than P. pilosa. The foliage of P. pilosa is just like that of P. grandiflora (moss roses,) like juicy pine needles, round in cross-section. Looks like this plant has a flat leaf.

You must be correct, Tiffany, P. amilis looks exactly like my plant. Thumbs up http://www.southeasternflora.c...

Not sure how to move it in the database...

I think there's a option at the bottom to move the plant. If not, you can contact any of the moderators and they will do it for you.

What is really difficult is the manner of discrepancies on the internet. Portulaca amilis looks exactly like your plant Christine and yet I saw photos labeled P. pilosa that also look like it. And then I just saw plants labeled P. amilis and P. pilosa that are neither.

In time I hope this forum on ATP can correctly identify here in California the portulaca. I'm traveling right now so don't have time but if I find a nursery I will find out if they can help.

But for now, I am also changing my opinion to Tiffany's opinion yours being Portulaca Amilis.
