How do you create privacy "walls" for your outdoor garden room(s)?

Thanks, Adina! I love the garden walls ideas to seperate areas in the yard. And I love the idea of being able to explore a hidden area that you have to walk to instead of seeing from a distance. Sort of like a Secret Garden! Smiling

Our DG friend Rodica(rodicap) has made a secret garden in her garden, so lovely! You sound like her, she likes to have hidden places in her garden too.

I love secret gardens!

It's like walking in the woods and finding a hidden area to stop and enjoy or to use as a an observation point. I always put seating in those areas!

Maybe I'll have such a place in my garden someday, when my trees will grow bigger. Do you have a big garden?

My yard isn't that big. It's a standard sized residential lot (80 feet x 125 feet). But the house takes up much of that space. Though our house isn't really that big. I don't know. I have a wide backyard and have put garden beds along the backyard privacy fence. That's where I have most of my plants. But most are in containers though, so it's not a lush garden. My plan is to get rid of all the grass/weeds in the backyard and have flower beds and paths in place of grass. I want to use every single piece of space! LOL! My dh likes that idea as he won't have to mow the yard anymore! LOL!

I also have the lawn in the backyard and I plan to put more plants in there, along the fence. Mybe this year I will do that.

Adina - I have plans to do many more raised beds with a gravel path rambling around them in my backyard, to get rid of the rest of the grass! LOL! Not this year though, but hopefully next year in 2012.

Becky, I'm pretty sure you have seen pic's of our hedge but I thought this was a good place to post a few.
It is a clipped Hew. We were given small seedlings maybe 12 inches high about 30 years ago. They were planted in a L shape coming out from the side of the house with a break you could walk thru in one side. It has grown into a beautiful tall hedge about 10 ft high 3ft wide.
Here you can see the L shape

Here you can see the arch we have grown thru the hedge. We call it the entrance to the Secret Garden. Of course the secret to the Secret Garden is that there is no garden there just a small side yard that hadn't been developed yet.

We have been working back in that area lately, If you walk thru there is a small grassy yard with only a few lilacs against one wall. Ric has always wanted to turn it into a small formal garden. To the right is the Veggie Garden. We are putting up a small GH in the Veggie Garden area with a Arbor and walk down to the GH. Since we have been working in that area we have picked up a few new plants. Last year we added very small variegated boxwoods as a low hedge between the Secret Garden area and the Veggie Garden area. They are still so small that you don't even see them in most pic;s They come out on either side of the new Arbor. I have also moved a euonymous against the house wall under the window and have two Climbing Hydrangeas to go in next to it. Ric will have to build me a good size trellis for them. I also came home with three Rose bushes not sure where he will plant them. But it will give the area a start. I can see this turning into a nice garden area.

New Arbor was build out of reclaimed wood. Very old from an old garage that had previously been an old carriage house.

After a trip to the LaDew Topiary Gardens last year Ric decided that he wanted to dress up the hedge a little and has recently tried adding a scalloped garland to the top of the hedge. It will take awhile to grow in and take form. But I thought it looked pretty good so far. He will have to see how much work it takes to maintain the look and if he feels it is worth the extra work. It can best be seen on the back and side of the hedge where you get the longest lines look best.

Holly - Your Hew looks great with that scalloped edging! Your dh is amazing!!! I wished my dh was more into gardening! I absolutely love your new area with the seating arbor, walkway, and eventually a greenhouse! I am so impressed with your vision and hard work! It's going to be awesome when it's all done!

Also that is interesting that the wood used is reclaimed from an old carriage house. A piece of history! That's really cool. Thumbs up You should have a plaque made to state that and place it somewhere on your new arbor. It would be neat to display that information for anyone visiting!

I think you are adding some beautiful plants in your new area. Climbing Hydrangeas and Roses! Oh yes! Definitely will be a sight to see when they are bigger! It will be your own private little piece of gardening Heaven! I hope you will keep us update as the new areas progress! I love seeing what you are doing and love your ideas! Lovey dubby

Thanks Becky, I will post more pics when the GH goes up. That will be in a couple of weeks. We want to stain the concrete floor for the GH and it must cure for 30 days before we can do that. Ric is working on the brick walk down to the GH now. We poured an insulated concrete slab with a brick center for the GH floor. You are right it does make in nice that Ric is both handy and a gardner.

You could post here or start your own thread about YOUR garden rooms. It's your choice. Smiling I look forward to see what you are wanting to do and what you have or will be doing to create your own rooms! Thumbs up
