Hi Melva,

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, the only pelargoniums I have right now are a few unknowns I got from Lowe's clearance rack for 0.25 each. If I get something really neat that I can take cuttings from I will be sure to post.

What's the trick to taking cuttings from these? I have one that has a wonderful, somewhat lemony scent that I love, but I haven't had any luck getting cuttings to root. No luck in water, no luck in perlite with root hormone.

Water doesn't work..tried that. When you make a cutting, make the cut on the bottom, right where a leaf will grow..not below it, or above it, right on it....I make the cutting about 4" long. Then you stick the cutting into some dirt. (I prefer to use dampened coir) keep the pot moist but not soggy and hope for the best. Now is a good time to do it. Also keep the pot out of direct sun.

I'll keep trying. I like coir, too. I didn't know where to cut it, so maybe that will make all the difference. Thanks for your help!

How would you divide a large geranium? I have one in a big pot, it's about 5 or 6 years old. It's currently in a 17" pot and it looks like it may have divided itself into 4 plants, but I would hate to kill it by cutting it apart. It's a constant bloomer with huge clusters of deep red flowers and the stalks are real thick. It's starting to look a bit ragged and I think it may be pot bound again, but I really don't want to go to a bigger pot. Anyone have any suggestions for this?

None however, if I find any information I will post for you.

I have some mosquito plant cuttings in water which I hope will root well. Should I do something different with them?

The only cuttings I've tried were from a plant that the dogs broke. I just dipped the broken ends in rooting hormone and stuck them in a pot I had in the shade and kept it damp, and most of them developed roots. I don't know if that was beginners luck, or if they really are that easy.

I keep meaning to try again, I planned on taking cuttings in the fall, but things came up, and it totally slipped my mind until after the frost got them.

I gave some cuttings to a friend, who simply placed them into water. She told me they developed roots and are now happy in soil.

I have some mosquito cuttings in water which seem happy; so I waiting and watching for them to develop roots.

I've only started pels from cuttings once but they did great. That was in 2010 but I didn't do any this year.

I read somewhere that they do best if allowed to dry and callous over. So when I took cuttings, I threw them into my garage for a day. But the next day they looked dry and dead and had formed a callous. I stuck them in damp potting soil then under a dome (or in a plastic bag?) for about a week. They took root fast.

I kept them under lights through winter and they thrived. They bloomed through most of winter and were beautiful in my yard the next year. These pictures were taken in Feb 2010

They bloomed all winter

I think high humidity is essential to root a lot of things from cuttings. Either a humidity dome or plastic bag seems to work wonders.
But pels don't like a lot of water; you want the potting mix just damp, not wet.

I take cuttings every year. Karen your information is right on. When they get growing they need to be spaced out so they grow nice and full.
