Hello
Sorry for the title in french
but I want to finish my little garden with a truly remarkable little tree
I am looking for a small, well scented tree for a small garden
Oceanic climate marked with the following conditions:
-facing north-west with strong winter storm coming from Atlantic sea..I'm near BREST in FRANCE
-well-perfumed in summer
-port not too "spread" .. I do not want a large shrub
-rather persistent .. but it is not a condition
-temperature: -5/-6 degrees celsius minimum
-Ground rather cool
My summers are bad: lack of heat
I thought of:
- Michelia figo
- Franklinia ... very beautiful flower and beautiful fall foliage
Can you advise me?

Pierre

ps: thank you all for your advice on calycanthus Aloysia virgata, hostas and heucheras

Pierre, I'm sure someone will comment soon. I'm sorry I cannot help you, I am lousy with shrubs/trees.

I see you have over 60 views , sooner or later someone will have a suggestion.
I just can not think of a nice flowering tree that is also fragrant.
All I have in my garden are dogwood and redbud and neither have much of a scent.
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.

I have sweet olive but it is a shrub, not a tree and I think it blossoms late winter here in Georgia.

Fragrant flowers in Summer? Chionanthus retusus or C. virginicus are around 8 metres and have white fringe-like scented flowers in early summer. Laburnum X watereri 'Vossii' is around 6 metres and has lightly scented pendant chains of yellow pea flowers in early Summer, and will tolerate tough conditions such as poor dry soil.

There are many lovely fragrant Summer flowering small trees, but from places like NZ or Chile, needing shelter from wind and mild winters.
