Most of my Semps are in containers so how does everyone control the chicks.


I was thinking of repotting this one. Seems like they out grow these sweet containers fast. Do you make a nursery bed or flat?

I think this is why some people plant in bigger containers or plant just a few in a container which allows for growth and spread. Me, I do the instant gratification route and plant containers full. Then I just pull the chicks out for other projects or planters. Extra semps can go into my semp bed or into my acclimation flats and lastly, extra semps can be used for bribes, gifted or traded away.

When I had a lot I did what Bev does. Bigger pots, more projects, I never thought about bribes. I will have to remember that use.

I'm forever potting into larger containers, but there are also those where the plants do not do as well or don't produce a lot of offspring. Traded away a lot of the extras a couple of years back, so that helps too. They are always trying to escape from the pots.. I've found I have a bias against semps that run longer stolons or that like to bloom a lot. Makes it harder to keep them looking nice. Then there is always the case where a colony ill suddenly all bloom at the same time, resulting in a population crash.

Just want to clarify that 85% of my semp bed is Noid City. The named semps are mostly in my acclimation flats.

Julia, my chicks in containers are usually out of control too. I think the ones in your picture look great hanging over the edge, but if you want to expand your collection I guess you'll have to remove them. I either replant in a bed or use them for crafts. I haven't tried using them for bribes yet, but if I knew someone who could be persuaded with semps I'd give it a try!

Those pots look really nice I am glad you asked this question as I will be growing mine mostly in containers too. Bev I love your bed it looks so nice now I want to make a bed at my place lol.

So many Semp project ideas are 'hatched' by the Hens' prolific chick production, the possibilities are really endless and so fun!! .

So many good ideas! Bribes!! That's a good one. I'm not really over run with chicks (yet) but I was thinking those danglers might die if you don't plant them. That is just a NOID pot but some real beauties. Bev, love your semp bed. I have come to the conclusion that I would be happier with my semps in the ground. Love all of yours.
