Crushed garlic or cayenne pepper flakes will repel aphids on plants.

The only scarce resource is time

Crush a couple of cloves, drop them into a pint sized sprayer, add warm water to fill and spray Hostas. They don't like the taste and keep off. Repeat spray as necessary, watering washes it off so bear that in mind. as rain also encourages the slugs to slither out again.
