Many of the Semps turn green during summer warm weather, so I was noticing which Jovis and Semps stayed Red and Rose Red.
I hope you will add yours!

Centennial....................this photo makes it look pinker than it is. I need to take one in a different light.

PS: I editted this to put the more purplish colored semps in the Purple thread. I was lumping together shades of purple, with the reds.

Emerald Empress and Crimsonette generally stay red for me during the summer. However, they need substantial sun to show best. Mt. Hood is another one that stays red.

Thanks, Evie, Lynn and Twit!!! I tip my hat to you. Nice ones!

Great idea for the threads, Lynn!! Hurray!

Summer can be so very "green" in the Semp world, if you know what I mean! Hilarious! Hilarious! ,

it's helpful when planting together to know which colors they will be during ****summer*****, when most of us are out enjoying them the most.

(Although us hardened sempophiles are watching them in the dead of winter like hawks, also! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing )

I'll start the threads you suggested, Lynn! nodding

Hardened as apposed to mushy like some of us? I did not go looking around until everyone started talking about
the colors and coming out of dormancy of the semps. And as a result I lost some of them as they froze after I removed
their protective coverings.

Pledge to self. "I will leave them alone until Mother's day regardless of what others are saying in other parts of the country."

In this case curiosity killed the semps. nodding

Right, It is the West Coast and Southern folks who have milder winters, with few last minute winter surprises that
can get away with working on the plants sooner than we folks in Colorado. I must say Tabby warned me to leave them alone.

Guess we will have to wait till spring to see if I learned my lesson Hilarious! Hilarious!

Everything I have is in pots. but the Mush part was me.. as apposed to "Hardened Sempaholics" Bev was referring to.
But I must say I am now losing Semps to the heat and perhaps not the best drainage.

I am about to repot some to see if I can salvage some that are looking very sad.

It is so true that different parts of the country present very different challenges for growing the little guys!
I am still learning too Blinking

This is a hard time of year for semps around here. The combination of heat and moisture can make them rot.
I find they do best if let to dry out very very well between waterings. I water in the late evenings so they are dry on the surface by next morning.
And I try to keep them out of the mid-day sun.
Those that are in hypertufa do the best because it's porous and seems to stay cooler than plastic. . As time goes on, more and more of my potted semps are ending up in hypertufa. I think there's at least 40 hypertufa pots with semps out in back now.

Although, come to think of it, I haven't lost any in plastic pots this year. Those poor semps have been the same plastic pots for a few years now. They must be all tough ones.

I've been lazy about watering the semps this year and I think that may be why they've kept such fantastic color. I've still got a lot of red in the garden.
Some that come to mind are Jeanne d' Arc Black Prince, Pacific Shadows, Legolas (drak red/purple) and Royal Ruby.

Ann Marie, Georgette and Aglow are still partially red.

I count the partial red ones as being red in summer. Mars is another one that is such a beautiful dark red & green combination this time of year.
