By Xeramtheum
August 13, 2013

Among the most frustrating things about gardening are the mystery plants remaining when their tags fade away from sun and rain. The fix is embossable tags, but the cost of buying them is prohibitive if you use a lot, as I do...

Wow, I couldn't pass up on reading this Idea. I give you both of my thumbs up for this. Thumbs up Thumbs up
And a hug. Group hug
This is going to save me a lot of money, because I am almost out of my other plant tags that I bought several years ago. At today's prices it is prohibitive.
I bet I could still use my printed P-touch labels on this. Hurray!

Thank you so much Anne. Hurray!

Thanks .. should have included in the article to remember that this is aluminum foil and you should be very careful of any trimmings you may make and be sure to dispose of them so kids or pets can't snarfle them up.

Great idea! Thumbs up It has to be easier to write/emboss on these than on the aluminum tags cut from soda/beer cans.

Do you stick half of the tag into the ground (with the plant)?

wonderful idea! I love the fact that the names will never wear away.

I too was wondering how to attach homemade tags or what to attach them to.

Oh, that's cool. I like the twist tie idea. I might try that on some of my woody shrubs.

This is a sound idea and I am certainly going to try it.

I wonder if you rubbed the embossed name with india ink on a sponge(wearing gloves) and then wiped the top, whether the ink would stay in the embossed writing?

Any other colours, like copper?

Anyway, thumbs up for this and for the clear explanation with photos. Well done and thanks,

Peter Thumbs up

I bought these years ago (2009)

Only problem is that if it's not embossed really clearly/hard, you can't read it later on as the aluminum just mangles. Mulch & aluminum tags don't go together very well due to the mulch squishing the aluminum into illegibility. And it's not very prudent for me to attach the tags up high because then I have to remove them from my roses when I prune them in the spring. So they didn't work well for me unfortunately.

Love this idea but how about adding a colored craft stick or a loop made from a bent coat hanger into the aluminum duct tape "sandwich" before sealing and cutting? That way you have something sturdy to poke into the ground.
