Just got my first new peonies in for the fall season, got Hermione, Peppermint Twist, Avalon, Pal and Chiffon Clouds from Peonies Plus. I put in a late order last week, caught Frank digging peonies in the field. Mine were dug the day after I talked to him and shipped out right away! Haven't even opened the box because it's 10pm and I know I'd be tempted to plant tonight if I did! Can't wait for the rest of the boxes to arrive....

Had Chiffon Clouds before but managed to kill it, hopefully I can do better this time.....

Just got my order in from Edelweiss Perennials, got Paeonia Miokosewitschii, delavayi red-black (tree), a variant of lutea (tree), tenuifolia (single red). All are in tiny, 4" pots so it will probably be several years before I see blooms from these.....

I agree, Tracey! I got orders in last night from both Hollingsworth and Adelman's, 32 ordered plus both sent an extra root! So now I get to plant, from Adelman's: Eventide, Pink Joy, Snow Swan, Lemonade Fringes, Paeonia Anomola, Bric A Brac (had it before but lost it, hopefully will do better this time), Cameo Lullaby, Moon Fritters, Quilt Show, Rooster Reveille, Salmon Jazz, Silly Sally and Vanilla Raspberry Swirl. They included Avelon as a bonus plant. It's really nice when it seems like someone put thought into the bonus plants--most of the ones from Adelman's were unusual blooms and Avelon fits right in with that theme. From Hollingsworth: Henry Bockstoce, Early Glow, Coral Fay, Roselette, Roy Pehrson's Best Yellow, Skylark, Serene Pastel, Summer Glow, Sunny Day, La Perle, Jean Cowley, Elizabeth Foster, Age of Victoria, Coral Scout, Blonde Vision, Prairie Charm and Cherry Ruffles. The Hollingsworth order was all over the spectrum as far as theme but I did have several yellows. Their bonus plant was a 2nd Blonde Vision, a very pretty double yellow. I'm not really sure how that one and the Coral Scout are going to bloom here in CO--both had cautions about late freezes damaging the buds which is an unfortunate certainty here! But with the warning hopefully I can protect those a bit more than I typically do for the rest.

Liz, what do you think about the quality of the roots from Adelman's? I would love to see a picture of them.

I have gotten peonies in the past, from a co-op that got the plants from Hollingsworth, the roots were large and healthy, and some of them bloomed the next spring.

Last week, from Adelman's, I ordered Chestatine Gowdy, Georgiana Shaylor, Mary Jo Legare, Minnie Shaylor, Mother's Choice, Nick Shaylor, and Tourangelle . From Old House Gardens, I ordered Hermione, 2 of Mrs. FDR, and Philippe Rivoire. From Van Engelen, I got 3 peony Moonstone.

I have in pots that I bought from a local nursery this spring Buckeye Belle, Festiva Maxima, Jan Van Leeuwen, Madame Emile Debatne, Nancy Nora, and Rosabel. I'm waiting till it gets cooler to plant these in the garden.

I have also have 3 pots of peony Vivid. These tiny tubers came from Walmart this past spring. I've been babying them, and I may keep them in the pots till next year and let them get a little larger. I also have a pot with a small Festiva Maxima, that I have been growing since last year, from another small tuber that came in a package from our local nursery, Pikes.

I love the older scented, double blooming peonies, which are the majority of my plants Smiling

It will be interesting to see what the roots from Hollingsworth look like this year as this is the first year with the new management.

I'm sorry, I planted everything yesterday morning and didn't take pictures before putting them in the ground. I thought all of the bareroots I received looked healthy, all were the advertised 3-5 eyes so should have a chance of blooming next spring.

I didn't realize Hollingsworth was under new management. I actually emailed them soon after putting in my 1st order--realized I'd ordered 2 of a variety I only wanted a single plant of. Tim replied very quickly and made a swap for me. I didn't see the change on their website when I checked a couple of weeks ago, contacted him again and he explained the process they follow for changes and that it wouldn't show on their website, sent a current invoice showing the change, and offered to put the 3 orders I eventually ended up with through them together to save on postage. The order was completely correct when I received it and contained a bonus root as I said above. I'll certainly order from them again.

Cem9165--I was mistaken, the orders I got in were from Klehm's Song Sparrow and Hollingsworth, my Adelman's order hasn't been filled yet. I'll post a pic of the roots when they come in. You're lucky to have a local nursery that carries different varieties of peonies, all we see here it typically generic "red", "white" or "pink" doubles! Those are beautiful, don't think I'm putting them down, but there are so many more beautiful varieties out there that I wish were grown/sold locally....those people who live near one of the major suppliers like Adelman's, Hollingsworth's or Klehm are so lucky!

Thanks Liz, I would love the see the roots from Adelman's, this is my first year ordering from them.

We are fortunate that we can get some of the potted, named peonies here from our local nursery Pikes, in 1 gallon pots for the herbaceous and 3 gallon post for the Itohs. I like the instant gratification, but it comes with a steep price. Lowes and HD also will carry some potted named peonies as well, some of my favorites, like Sorbet, Wladislawa, Imaculee, and Gardenia came from these stores.

With my first attempts at growing peonies, the plants came from Costco or Sam's, 3 per box, and they took several years to mature and bloom, but I'm very happy with them now.Bowl of Beauty is one of them.

Beautiful pic of a piece of your garden. It looks lush and serene. I'm with you in that I also love the fragrant doubles - and semi-doubles. One of them I hadn't intended to buy was Wladislawa, but Canadian Tire was selling off their nursery stock - well-cared-for plants, too - and I got it for $5, as well as a Yachiyotsubaki for $13. I couldn't resist at that price. One I can't wait to see is Pink Vanguard (in fact, it arrived yesterday), especially after someone here had posted a GORGEOUS pic of it.

I'm lucky that a lot of nurseries here carry peonies. Half of their stock tends to be itohs. They are way too expensive for me - $100. However, if you can catch a sale, or wait till the end of the season, decent prices can be found. Their herbaceous selection tends to be limited, but that's ok, I enjoy mail-ordering for them.

Oh, Liz, did you get La Perle after I told you about it? I hope I inspired you!

Pwinjet, thanks for the compliments! You are really fortunate to have such good choices for plants. It's sad that I don't see peonies being grown in many gardens around here, and I had not seen the plants offered here in nurseries before, like I do now. I have lived in my current neighborhood for 9 years, I have not seen a single peony plant except in my own garden.

I don't know why some people dont think that peonies would do well in the south, but I have been very happy with how well they have done here. I'm glad I'm a zone pusher!

I'm going to check our local nurseries this weekend to see if there are any peony plants for sales. They tend to promote the peonies in the spring, so maybe I'll find some good buys.

Pwinget, yes I did get La Perle! Got it as part of my Hollingsworth order last week and has been planted. Looking forward to seeing it bloom (hopefully!!) next spring. Ended up with over 100 ordered, mostly herbaceous with a few tree and Itoh's.

Cem9165, I agree with Pwinget, your garden looks lovely and peaceful. I ordered Imaculee for this fall! Have Gardenia and Sorbet, love them! I'm not in the south, we're in a zone that peonies like, but I don't see very many varieties here, either. Even our botanical garden only has around 50 varieties. Peonies, for the most part, can take our crazy springs, do well with the low amounts of water over winter and are deer resistant. If they just re-bloomed in the summer I'd probably never plant anything else! Probably just as well, it'd be beautiful but kinda' boring with just the one type of plant, huh?

I have Pink Vanguard on my list for next year, think I have enough to plant this fall! I'm going to look up the others you guys mentioned, haven't seen Wladislawa or Yachiyotsubaki. Crazy good find at that price, Pwinget!! Ok, just looked them up, Yachiyotsubaki is really, really pretty! Does the Wladislawa smell good? I have a lot of single pinks but not very many with a nice scent. That one will make my list too if it smells nice!

Can't wait until the next box arrives in the mail! We're finally having something similar to fall here but it's been so wet I haven't started digging/dividing/moving anything yet but am getting really inspired!!!

I can see why, magnolialover. They have a very nice selection! Did your shipment come in? Which ones did you get? I don't think I'll have anything else coming in for the next couple of weeks so I'm gardening vicariously for a while....

Ticker, glad to hear your roots looked good from Hollingsworth. Did you order from them before the management change? Did you notice a difference? I only ordered from them once before, several years ago, but don't think there was much difference.....

Went to a particularly inspiring tree peony talk back in March. Had a couple on my list for years, sunrise was one of them, four total. Can't wait.

Cem9165, just got an email that my order from Adelman's is on the way! I'll take a picture before I plant them and post back, hopefully by the weekend!

Ticker, I'm glad to hear the quality seems the same. I know I was impressed by their customer service and their quick and informative replies to my emails. Tim replied to an email this spring when I was trying to identify a NOID in my garden, his response was nice enough that I remembered the name. He responded to queries this summer, too, about some orders I made and was very helpful in combining them and sending them early for me. I'll certainly be ordering from them again!

All of these peonies coming in and being planted, I sure am looking forward to spring bloom pictures!
