We all know that magnets are good for preventing hardware disease, when cows eat the little bits of metal that may be hiding in your feed, hay or grass. But it seems that this once easy answer is complicated today by the fact that there are now numerous kinds of different "cow magnets" on the market.

I'm curious if any of the members here feed magnets to their cows and if so, what kind? And where did you get them?

Oh wow Dave. I saw this post and just had to open and read it because I couldn't imagine what you meant. This city girl knows nothing about cows! Hilarious!

Ummmm.........technically, you don't "feed" the magnets to the cows. I mean, they're not gonna up and eat 'em.........they're like big 'horse pills" and need to be given with a balling gun. Some farmers routinely give their first calf heifers magnets when they freshen. We did not as a case of hardware was not all that common on our farm.

Forgot to add that you can buy them at a farm supply store but since we didn't routinely give magnets, the vet did it when he diagnosed hardware.

'Sorry for the misunderstanding. I used the term "feeding" when tree-mailing with Dave. I do use a balling gun but here, we call it "feeding the cow" Big Grin I guess it is one of those cases of different geography, different terms (or we are just strange in this little neck of the woods) Thumbs up

Stan says, whatever he gets, depends on who's selling them. He puts them in every cow if there seems to be a lot of problems, but usually just when he suspects a case of hardware. You only have to do it once - they aren't likely to pass. The chopper has a metal alert, the feed cart has a magnet, we try to be careful.

Where do we get them? American Vet, NASCO, the vet, the local feed mill

Yeah obviously I didn't mean you literally feed the magnet to the cow. Sticking tongue out Now I'm imagining a pail full of magnets being presented to the cow in her stanchion! Hilarious!

Thanks for that, Kathleen. I've ordered from NASCO several times in the past and they always seem to have what I need.
