So, I've had a pretty awful summer when it comes to gardening. I guess I hadn't completely readjusted my planting schedule from the Midwest; I'm blaming most of my failures on planting too late this spring for things to really establish.

But I don't have that excuse for the lavender I planted; it went in last fall. Can anyone give me nitty-gritty instructions on growing it in AZ? I got a feeling I might have over-sunned/ over-watered it, but I'm not certain about soil prep, etc.

Only have experience in the Dallas area and I manage to kill all mine eventually. I would think in your area that at least afternoon shade would be best for it. Maybe post the question on the Ask ATP forum?

I am here but do not grow lavender. I think I tried years ago and it did not do well.

I agree with Debra about the afternoon shade. In fact that would be my advice on about everything we grow in this climate.

Dunno if it helps, but I noticed that direct water during our last heat wave almost killed my english lavander I just put in. I ended up digging a few shallow holes around the root zone of the plant and would fill these with water every 1-2 days depending on the heat. After switching my watering style my plant recovered in the next week from the wilting.

Hopefully that and a little afternoon shade as others suggested will get the job done.

Maybe that contributed to the loss of my 5-year-old, 4-foot-wide Provence Lavender. Rarely ever direct watered it until this year. Most of it has just died away and the cause has been puzzling me.

Well, I'm gonna try it one more time. More shade, hopefully, that will make more water less necessary. I know that drainage is critical, so.... quarter minus it is.
