These are the seed stalks I harvested today. I can't believe how easy Kevin's method is in harvesting the seed. Some are already falling into the bottom of the bag.
S. marmoreum f/Kanzan Gorge x Bee pollinated
S. ‘Red Lion’ x S. ‘Oddity’ But many seed are unknown pollination

I'm really curious what the seed brings up Drooling

Well that is odd, that there is no photo of the bloom in the database.
I will go remedy the oddity. Whistling
Here you go. I did remove the normal leaved blooms stalks and only let the stalks with the tubular leaves remain for seed.

You can see many of the blooms do not appear to have pollen present. Hoping by bringing S. 'Red Lion' pollen to a maturing bloom on S. 'Odddity' that I might get something from this.
I did take a couple of blooms that had pollen from the 'Oddity' to the 'Red Lion', trying both ways.

Lynn,

Good for you!! In '15 we'll have to go judge your seedlings for the clinic!

I'm excited about the possibilities of red versions of 'Oddity'. Now if we could put tufts or cobwebs on that too! The mind boggles! I think using the most mutant stalks for the crosses gives you the greatest chance of getting odd seedlings. From what i saw it looked as though the 'Oddity' pollen was the normal bright golden yellow color at least.

Many of the blooms had no pollen at all, and wouldn't open. We will see what comes from the experiment.

We should not be surprised that Lynn was able to get Oddity to act even more odd. That funny colored thumb, you know. BTW, isn't Dallas near Salem? Wasn't Salem where all the witches were? You been incanting lately, Lynn??

Seriously, way to go Lynn. Always keeping an eye out for opportunity, then following thru. Let's not forget that Red Lion occasionally variegates. So you just might end up for a red and green tubular variegated oddity at some point. I wonder if the flowering was tied in some way to having some Oddity that revert to normal form?

The revert to normal, reverted back to tubes. It truly is an oddity. I think that rosette did that because it was an old rosette, so was going through a morphing process like normal rosettes from other varieties. The rosette got very large, with partially tubed leaves.

That would be Salem, MA. Not incanting here. Big Grin

Don't have any little odd ball oddities yet, so don't want to get to excited.

I do have some variegated 'Red Lion' that I got from Young's. So far all of my 'Red Lion' has been normal color.

Lynn,

If you're like me you have already "mentally germinated and grown" those seedlings from your crosses. Even when I'm making the crosses I sort of see in my head what the seedlings will be. However, the 'Killer' seedlings have certainly been surprises. It has given brilliant colors and color that lasts all season in most cases. Imagine 'Oddity' X 'Killer'!!

I hate crossing the heuffeliis as you have to rip all the petals off to get to the stamens so I mostly have been covering those stalks, moving the pollen from flowers on the same stalk without removing the anthers. That way I'm sure they're self-pollinated at least. Am trying to see which cultivars give rise to yellow/ gold seedlings. We need some VIGOROUS gold heuffeliis. I am seeing the paler seedlings from 'Torrid Zone' and 'Hot Lips' that Bill Nixon predicted would happen. Some of these are sort of grass green or lime green now (like 'Gold Bug' or 'Xanthoheuf' do) whereas their siblings are bright red. Best news is that some of these light ones also seem to be vigorous.

KevinI do have thoughts in my head as to what they might look like. It would be mind boggling to have a 'Oddity' x 'Killer'.

I will have to get brave and give the heuffelii a try next year. Bring on those yellow/golds Kevin. Hurray! Hurray! Green Grin!

Cheese Summer seems to hold that lovely yellow/gold color for a long period of time. Oh to try that one here in the Pacific Northwest. Lovey dubby

some yeras ago I found some seedlings in pots I want to clean because the only rosette in it had bloomed; but they were nothing unique;

and because there are still so many cultivars I've never started large-scale hybridizing - I concentrate to collect the existing..there are still so many beautiful cultivars missing;

I have the ambition to collect every single available cultivar of the world Whistling
