We're just loving this one now. Blooming like crazy since June, with no end in sight. Some of the newer patented varieties of Meadow Sage are really nice - but so is this old fashioned one!

Lovely! How strange, though, that this cultivar would be called 'Lapis Lazuli' when lapis lazuli is blue and this is pink? Confused
(The usual colour of Salvia pratensis is closer to lapis than this selection... sort of... it really looks purple to me, not blue.) I'm puzzled!

I grew my 'Lapis Lazuli' from seed and I thought the color was off because of hybridization, but it appears to be dead on based on that photo.

Yes, I looked it up too... Salvia pratensis 'Lapis Lazuli' is supposed to be pink, which is what is so strange! Confused

I guess plant naming people just attached names they like no matter what the color of the flowers they are. Maybe just to confuse us. Shrug!

So much confusion in the identification of many Salvias. Nurseries that have something like this as one out of thousands of plant varieties they grow cannot be expected to know what the "real" variety is supposed to look like. So many retailers buy their stock from wholesalers who are faced with the same issue - is this or is this not what I was told it to be. I see mislabeled Salvias all the time. Now, having said that . . .

Lapis Lazuli is bicolor, medium lavender blue and a whitish blue. Not pure blues, mind you - they have pink in them. But most people would say these flowers are blue. Such shades can vary a great deal with time of year and weather, and have not been easy for me to capture photographically. This picture is OK, but not perfect:

Cooler weather seems to bring out the blue.

My 2 cents worth.

Just saw this thread.. haven't been hanging out here as much as I should. As far as goofy names, check out this rose.

Tantalizing Red
Rose (Rosa 'Tantalizing Red')

red? Uh, nope. LOLLL Kinda reminds me of a rose I bought a couple of years ago. Bought a "Chrysler Imperial", which is a bright red rose. Bloomed white. Confused

Perhaps my monitor is reading the colour in this photo very differently, but it's a definite pink at this end, though I agree it's pink with a blue undertone... Big Grin
However, googling photos of Salvia pratensis 'Lapis Lazuli', I don't see any that come off as blue.

This is what lapis lazuli looks like, and I can attest that the colours are accurate on my monitor (and actually blue):

No matter, it's just peculiar that cultivar names can be so misleading and yet accepted! Confused I can only assume that whoever named it really had no idea of the colour of lapis!
