Do you name your cows, pigs, chickens, goats, trucks, tractors, or, well you name it? I once worked for a family that actually named their dishwasher! How about you?

I was resistant to naming chickens, but my granddaughter trumped me on that one. I now refer to them by name, although they certainly pay no attention to it. Nor do I see any particular 'personality' in any of them, although to be fair I am not a hands-on chicken person and don't spend much time with them other than to tend to their needs and gather eggs.

We randomly name some, but not all, tools. We currently have Edgar (hand-held clippers), his cousin Edward (battery clipper), Sammy (our best shovel), Paulie (walk behind lawnmower) and Plow-Boy (the old riding lawnmower that gets taken into really rough areas with no regard).

Our tractors are just called by the maker - The Cub and The Kubota. I should get my husband to give them proper names.

When we had cows, they were each called Moseley - usually when trying to get one of them to get in or out of a pasture or corral, 'Come on there Moseley, that's a good cow...' Other than that, they were just the cows. Oh, except for the Black Bast*rd, who earned his name by jumping over every fence we had. He had a short life.

we just had one rooster that got named Big Bast*rd, or Big B for short since we had a three-year-old around.

I don't name my tools but I like the idea. I'll have to see of I can come up with some appropriate ones.

None of the chickens or guineas have names but the goats are all registered so they do.

Around here if an animal gets a name it isn't a good thing. At least with our herd animals anonymity is a key to long life. Now the milk goats and show cows have names, the one cow that wasn't a show animal is called "no name" cow.
We tend to name problem animals, usually something unflattering. It is the first step to freezer camp.

Like Joy, something has to draw attention to itself (in either a good or usually bad way) to get a name around here. Several of the mama cows have names as does the lead steer. He, at least, knows his name. One sow earned the name Pzarina (the P is silent). No tractors have names but one truck is The Slug. A few of the chickens have names too - mostly uncomplimentary. The horses all have names as most are registered. We have never named tools, but it could happen.

Susan names the milk goats. The bucklings are all named cabrito. Last year she named the chickens the Mc nugget crew. They were cornish cross amd were tasty. We have 1 pig now. Her name is Sausage her sister Bacon went to freezer camp. The dogs get names puppies get sold.

When we had an Old MacDonalds' kind of farm, we named a lot of animals. Beef cattle were Burger King, Miss Steak, Shiska Bob, T-Bone, Sir Loin, Chuck. Pigs were not named as often, but the best pig names I ever came up with were for a male and female we raised together. They became Hamsel and Griddle. Others were more common names like Pork Chop. The only chicken that ever had a name was a little banty we called the Little Red Hen.

My neighbor had a cow they called Wild Lass, a good looking crossbred beef cow who seemed to be a bit high headed and snorty as a weanling. She went over or through fences, ran over people and un-endeared herself to everyone. Then they dropped the L. She went to the auction. Her daughter was becoming just like her as a yearling, and graduated to the freezer where she behaved herself at last.

Hamsel and Griddle are the best names so far!

We name the long-term critters (horses, cows, goats, etc) except for the egg birds. Anyone slated for the table remains anonymous. I found it was easier when the kids were little if it was just "that bull calf" or "one of the meat birds" rather than telling them that we were eating Tom or Frank (they always asked if it was one of ours or store bought). If it had a name, it was too close to eating a pet for them. Nowadays, if someone earns a name, it is a good omen for a long and happy life.

30 or 40 years ago, I went through a phase where everything that came in was promptly named Fred. We had Fred the parrot, Fred the cat, Fred the houseplant.... but I quickly passed beyond that.

We called the New Haven Science Fiction and Fantasy Association "Fred" because "NHSFFA" was too hard to pronounce.

My computer at work was named Fred. I thought using my last name (which everyone else in the office did) was just boring. Carrying on that trend, my home computer is Wilma.

When the kids were little, they were in charge of naming the livestock guardian dogs, starting a tradition that continues today. All have Disney or Pixar names except for Frosty and Lucy who came at Christmas time and were named accordingly. Buzz, Dug, Ellie, Boo, Peaches, and Russell.
My youngest's first steer was named Dead Bob, his show heifers, grandmother, mother, daughter, were Honey, Polli 8, and Bee utiful. My favorite was his BC he named Hochalugy, and called her Spit. Since no one ever sees papers, he loved explaining the origin of her name and the fact that it got approved.
Don't ever name tools or equipment, just shovel, hammer, Ford, Dodge, Chevy.
When I perform at Celtic Festivals I introduce my Sebastopols as whatever Celtic names come to mind but the last is always Ed or Bob which makes the crowd laugh.
Oh, and I forgot the two rescue donkeys whose names always change with the seasons, they were Frank and Stein till today, now they are Peke and Pie. And so on through the year.

All the black snakes here are Blackie....the white oaks are Mz. Annie....and the ones with venom are either Dead or History. The anoles are C and the fence lizards are Buddy. My jeep is Poppy because she is red and was bought with money left to me by my father whom I called Pops.

A wise person once told me "never name anything you're gonna eat". LOL

I named my car..........it's a Mini Cooper, black, and the seats' color inside are reminiscent of an orca whale. Sooooo............the car's name is Orca.

My tiller is named Red Roller. A friend borrowed it and his kids named it

I have generic names for all species around here. All chickens are Henly, all cats are Flea-biscuit, female dogs are Bitchly, males dogs are Edgar. I do have a cat with a "real" name. Her name is "Cat-cow".
My 3 year old son was learning to talk and one day I was showing him a cow- the same day some 'tard threw a kitten into our lane and sped off. For whatever reason, my son fused both words when referring to the new kitten.
As a side note, when I took Cat-cow to the vet to be spayed, I was told to return at 5 pm. I did so and the vet tech brought me the wrong cat to take home! Turns out the same day another person brought their cat in to be spayed. That cats name was "Holy-Cow". What are the chances?!? Lol.
I guess after 8 kids, I am just tired of naming things. My daughters all answer to "You! Girl! Come here!" I have 7 of 'em. My poor Son, Henry, thinks his name is "Little Baby". He gets all mad at me now and loudly announces his name is now "Big Boy". Ok, I can go with that....

My sister named a horse Ought. She said that is what he was worth. He was a ranch horse, did all kinds of cattle work, and eventually got a lot better than his name suggested, but she never changed it. Remember old timers who called the years in the early 20th century nineteen ought one, etc. That's where she got it. There aren't any more of those old timers around now.
