I just read an article from Mother Earth News about using Pennyroyal as an underplanting for eggplant to deter flea beetles. Has anyone tried this? It suggest maybe trying with other plants that have insect problems. I have had such a problem with bean beetles that I was thinking of trying it as a companion plant for beans. Any thoughts?

I have heard of Pennyroyal being used to repel flies, mosquitos, and fleas…Though I'd not dispute Mother Earth News…Love them! I've not seen that article. I'll have to look for it.

Marigolds may be a better choice for the beetles. They are said to discourage 'mexican' bean beetles, along with many other insects/pests.

Oh my, I live in Oregon where pennyroyal is certainly the state plant. If anyone would like to have starts of pennyroyal, let me know and I'll send them to you for the postage, bare-rooted and all. Be cautious, though, as it does all of the above, but will take over in an even more aggressive fashion than the rest of the mint family. I notice that my chickens will pick at it and take baths in it, but they don't mow it down like they do other plants. I've thought that maybe it helps with internal and external parasites, but in small doses. It is considered a medicinal herb and has been used for centuries to control birth (abortifacient - ughhhh). Anyone wanting any can email me at [email protected] and will arrange to mail you some.
