My dog alerted me to this bold coyote, calming sitting at the edge of our firepit area this morning. When the coyote finally decided to head down the hill toward the pond, another one joined it and they loped off together into the back woods. I immediately went to count my chickens (all OK), their yard is about 50 feet from where the coyote was sitting.

Wow! what a cool photo with all that coldness in the back round!! I'm sure they can climb fences!! Did you electrify the chicken fence? (I can't remember?) Hope they stay healthy, and not some poor beasts meal! Hilarious! Group hug

No to the electric fence, and I do know both neighbors have lost chickens to predators. So far, we've been OK. I do lock the chickens in their coop at night which is the normal time for attacks. But, unusual to see a coyote so blatantly close in the daytime. Frankie is pretty good at sounding the alarm when there are any unusual animals in the vicinity, and I plan to putt around outside today (in spurts, it's COLD out there).

Great photo.

A friend who owns a B & B up here gave up on keeping chickens when a bear leaned on her chain link fence and ate all of her chickens for a snack.

I haven't even been tempted to try keeping chickens or rabbits because I don't want to provide bait for the critters.

Lovely picture Deb. Forlorn but hopeful.

I looked more closely at the photo Deb and even the fence in the backround is really cool looking! It does look like the critter is posing for you! with a smile on its face! nodding
A bear leaning on the fence for a snack sounds totally scary! Its not like you could do a whole lot to shoo him off!! Hilarious!
@Roseblush1 are you anywhere near Weaverville? I have a brother that lives in Big Flat, which is along Highway 299 near Mountain Home - if you know those places! I tip my hat to you.

Yes. I live in Weaverville. Both of the friends I've mentioned with bear and cougar problems live in Lewiston, the next town down the mountain.

BH, Nice photo!! but boy is it cold out. I find it a bit creepy that a coyote would come that close during the day. Hope they were not casing the chicken area. Go Frankie and don't forget you back up the lab because they might team play on you. Keep your dog save.
