Amaryllis Papillon is a species Amaryllis. It is treated differently than the hybrids but I cannot remember when to water and fertilize it and when to withhold water and fertilizer. Can someone help me?

I treat mine just like the hybrids.There is an exception.If you happen to have the "Doran strain" then that one prefers not to go dormant in winter.The difference in the two types is that the "Doran strain has much more green in the flower.

I let mine grow because I read that it was an evergreen and it would bloom, now I wish that I had treated it like the hybrids, it hasn't been doing too well, but maybe it is because it is winter and it wants to go dormant because of the short gloomy days.

Thank you both for answering and thank you to Margaret for the welcome emoticon. To Margaret: Amaryllis Papillon is evergreen but doesn't need a lot of water or special soil. But if you are colder than zone 9, I would keep it inside in the winter. I have had it bloom fabulously well, but I cannot remember if it was because I withheld water from it early in the winter. I used to have a great memory; but those days appear to be dormant. Thanks again. Zephyr p.s. I just noticed Margaret lives in zone 3. No doubt you do bring it in!

Zephry, Papillon was new to me last year and it bloomed beautifully, I think I should have forced it into dormancy this fall like the others in my little collection, live and learn. I grow them inside all year, nights are pretty cool here in the summertime because of the altitude.

Thank you Zephyr, for the nice comment on my photo. We are 3500 feet, and about 200 miles from the coast. Yes it gets pretty cold here in the winter.

Disclaimer: I tend to do everything wrong, unwittingly, of course, so take it for whatever it's (not) worth:
I don't force any of my amaryllis into dormancy, but when/if they choose to go there, I let them be until they choose to come out--translation--I let them dry out at the first sign of going dormant and start watering them again at the first sign of breaking dormancy or whenever I figure that it's been long enough. They are all potted and live in sunny windows; I forget to fertilize, but if I remember to feed them it is generally after blooming when they are being all leafy in the summer. They all tend to bloom for me Feb/March when the days start getting longer.
Papillon hasn't gone dormant for me, although it only had one scape in it's second year. Here are a couple pics from last Feb. The second bad pic shows that it is blooming while leafed out--i.e. not having been dormant, as well as a second scape.

Dirtdorphins, your method works for you, they bloom that's all that matters.

I think the short days of winter made mine go dormant, the leaves looked crappy so I cut them off, stopped watering and stuck it in a dark cool cupboard in the mudroom, we shall see what happens in a few weeks.

your amaryllis papilon doesn't have the deep green stripes of mine. I do know that Papillon is a species and does not go dormant when it is happy. Other than that. I have forgotten more than I could have ever learned. thanks for your response. zephyr

No deep green stripes...I thought I remembered it being greener when I first got it, but I cannot find those pictures. Perhaps you have the illusive "Doran strain"??

I am currently 3000 miles from home and computer photos of my Papillion blooming. I have had three flights cancelled. Hoping to leave for west coast tomorrow night. I've managed to Kill (with kindness) 3 Papilio As many of you know, these Aren't Cheap!
Not giving up Will try 1 more time & keep it on the dry side. Was able to keep 1 alive for 2 years w/o much growth.. then it just 'melted'
