I've recently found that hellebores do very well here, and I'm interested in adding to my small collection. As additions, I think I might prefer plants that bloom above the foliage, or are at least upward facing. Which are your favorites of these types?

I bought Cinnamon Snow and Pink Lady the year before last from SRG and two Red Lady's from GTG. None of them bloomed, but I did pick them out and I like the upfacing hellebores only. Last spring I got a Lenten Rose, Hellebore from Bluestone. They are all healthy and I am hoping to see some blooms this year, then I will go crazy and buy 5 more!! Hurray! Hurray!

My Pink Frost was more sideways than upward, but it was pretty.

When the new growth starts remember to cut away the old so you get to see and enjoy the blooms, this is also the best time to feed them.

From what I have seen the Gold Collection has good upturned flowers , they mostly come from Christmas Rose.

@NJBob You are such the enabler! I have not seen any old growth or new, they just look the same only bigger. What kind of fertilizer should I give them? They got a good spray of MG when I did the Hostas in August.

Thanks!

Last year I didn't really see the difference between new and old foliage to know what to cut away. To me it looked like the only new growth was the bloom stalks. Shrug!

I hadn't really realized either that there were so few available (online) to select by cultivar or type. I bought a couple of plants from Santa Rosa last year, but I don't see anything in their lists for 2014.

This one is blooming right now in my zone 7 garden. This is the 2nd year for it.
Here are some pictures of mine with the leaves cut off.
Thumb of 2013-12-24/springcolor/188805 Thumb of 2013-12-24/springcolor/4b7c8c
I left a few because I did this before the blooms started to emerge. Thought I might rake up later , never did, but I wanted to leave one or two leave to see where the plant was. I cut the old leaves off so you can see the blooms. Later the new growth will come up and the plant will fill in again. You don't do this on the Corsican type or you will cut the blooms off. Only the type where the blooms emerge from the soil. The Corsican blooms on the stems.
Another thing I do is lay lime chips around the plant. You can see a bit of that in the photos. Looks like I need to do that again. There is a fungus , black spots on the leaves that these plants get. Lime chips and cutting old growth of helps with this disease.
If you have a rockery or wall that you walk near the hellebores look great there. You can look up at them. I have a place like that but those are not blooming.
This is a great book The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hellebores by Graham Rice and Elizabeth Strangman.

Thanks for the advice. These plants whose leaves hang around for winter throw me for a loop sometimes.

Hellebore are considered heavy feeders and need very fertile soil , so I add compost every year and feed at flowering time and in the Fall with 10- 10- 10. I agree with Julia about adding some lime. They also like magnesium so you can add a little Epson salt if your soil is low.

Are we suppose to cut the leaves off Hellebore after they bloom or when? I have never cut mine and is why they are so floppy?
Helleborus is one of the plants that grow well for me in this zone 8 and I want to be kind to the,m.

Good one Jo Anne!!! That's just what I do so you get rid of the old leaves and you can see the flowers. How ever one word of caution!!! You need to know what kind of hellebore you have. http://search.aol.com/aol/imag...
If you look at some of these pictures the blooms are on he stems don't cut these. Look for the blooms if they are coming up at the crown (emerging from the ground ) ok to cut like the video says.

Another source. http://www.digplanet.com/wiki/... Illustrates what I'm saying about different kinds of Helleborus.
