I've never bought any labeled white, they said yellow & peach but so far, all flowers have been white on my plants. I wonder if continuing to attempt to get other colors will result in slightly different scents, or is it "smelled one, smelled them all?"

They have different scents. Did I give you any cuttings when you were here?

Oh brother, I wish I'd just assumed incorrectly & went on my way... LOL! TY for that. If you'd offered, I would have said I already have some. I'm going to stop making new white ones now though, I really wasn't bowled over by the scent. This genus can't have so much hype about its' fragrance over what I've sniffed from those. I'm not a picky sniffer, I don't think - I like Lantana & Cleome, Buddleia, these are often said to smell, but not GOOD.

Someday I will find a Datura metel flower to sniff! I found a flower on Hoya carnosa at L's last week and that ended that mystery. After digging the other plants out from in front of it, then dumping water from the drip saucer attached to the hanging basket down my arm and all over my shoe, I was able to put nose to flower, and phew - it stunk, bad. (I checked, it wasn't the water causing the foul odor.) That didn't smell worth $15 at all, chocolate was the farthest thing from my mind to describe it. Not something I'd want in the house, so extremely glad I hadn't finally found one before when I felt like giving up $15 just to see what a flower smelled like someday. So much for decades-long hype on that, case closed (and money saved.)

If they would stop attaching drip saucers to hanging baskets, what a wonderful-er world it would be! I hope you & your critters are having a pleasant evening, Friend! Hugs!

Some of them haver stronger scents then others but they all smell wonderful. Enjoy your collecting. Took me a year until my thirst for brugs calmed down.

My kids just arrived from Utah on Sunday and my big pink NOID brug was in full bloom. They went out and smelled it, and commented that it sure does smell different than the wild Datura that grows in Southern Utah.

Btw, Tiffany there are hoyas that do smell really nice as well as the yucky smelling ones. I don't have any, last thing I need is to start collecting another type of plant! But a friend who collects them says her favorite one smells like jasmine.

These plants are some kind of Brugmansia. Scent only 'active' at night.

Rhapsody, joy of smell is definitely in the nose of the be-smeller, but have you for sure sniffed this kind? I really didn't enjoy it. Didn't want to gag like some Narcissus but I won't go out of my way to sniff these anymore.

I wonder what kind of Datura would be in Utah? Jimsonweed (D. inoxia?) DH's Mom has a D. stramonium at her house but I've never detected any scent. Sniffing after dark might be needed.

Thanks for the input! I'll keep an open mind if I encounter another Hoya with blooms. After all of the heartbreak with Jasmines (speaking of!!) over the years, I have a policy against having any plant just for the scented flowers - if I don't enjoy just the leaves too.

There's definitely space in the yard to 'try' other plants. I'll be looking for other color Brugs when trading this summer! Thanks for the encouragement.

Ginger, I forgot to ask above, what colors do you have? My Plumeria cuttings still look great, BTW!!

Yep, Tiffany it is Jimsonweed. Each year there are news stories about teenagers getting high and killing themselves from eating the seeds. But the durned things grow wild on the roadsides!

Most if not all brugs are scented only at night, I think. They are pollenated by a night-flying moth. These pink ones I have blooming now do smell more soapy than the white ones, Monster White, that bloom all summer for me. Must be the cooler nights keeping them fresh longer, but they've developed a lot more color than they usually do, too. Not complaining . . Big Grin

purpleinopp ~ I blend oils for a living so my smeller is fairly acute. LOL I do enjoy each and everyone of the bloomers in my yard. I am in zone 10b so I don't loose many plants. I don't think I have smelled Lantana & Cleome or Buddleia. They don't seem to be registered one BGI so I can't see even a picture. If you have some pict please post them. Happy Holidays

TY for the inputs! I didn't expect to hear from a pro-sniffer - how cool is that?! All I know about the ones I have is that the flowers are white and don't match the written hype I've read about Brugs in general. Curious if the other colors have a different scent.

Yes I was just comparing them to other ubiquitous (in this half of the country,) polarizing flower scents (Lantana, Cleome, Buddleia - which is usually called butterfly bush.) I've never been out west, these plants may be unsuitable/not found there. Petunias are similar, not all have a scent, but the ones that do, some people love, others want to gag. Petunias don't all have the same scent either, some of those I like more than others.

I agree on the petunias, for sure. Sometimes they smell great. So true that some people smell things differently than others as well. Taste, too!

I've heard different descriptions of brug fragrance, from "like jasmine" to "hmm, Ivory dish soap" too.

Mine are generally grouped together, so the scents mingle. IF I can get the white ones to bloom in the next month or two, at the same time as the others maybe I can do a direct comparison. The white ones are across the yard right now.
