The wind-chill is minus 40 here this morning. I like that I don't have to look up the conversion of degrees Celsius to degrees Farenheit. It's the same on both scales!

What is your wind-chill today, and what do you wear when you absolutely have to go out in it? I'm dressing in thermal underwear beneath lots flannel and wool layers, a heavy-duty LL Bean parka, a head-band, a neck/face scarf, lined gloves with extra liners, and lip salve. Thank goodness the garden has about 2ft of snow on it now!

Today----I don't think we have a wind chill.
This is a warmer week for us.

But definitely we put layer upon layer when there is a wind chill.

There is no wind where I am today.

Our actual temp was -28F this morning. I don't know what the windchill was but it was COLD. I didn't go out today, it's suppose to be warmer tomorrow so I saved everything I needed to do outside until tomorrow. It's already -16 this evening so it ain't no heatwave yet! The darn deer have been digging in my flowers, so some things have that 2 feet of snow but where they've been digging not so much. I'm hoping there's enough for the plants to survive!

The deer are getting pretty desperate here. There's a layer of ice under the snow, so they can't dig for greenery. They are now chewing on any kind of twigs, even stuff they usually don't eat, such as lilacs. I fear for my tree peony!

Aw...poor things, they jumped the fence into our yard to get at the bird feeders, had to spray the fence a couple of times with bloodmeal. Is there something you could wrap around your tree peony to keep them from eating it??

The tree peony is on its own! If it's lucky, the snow will hide it from hungry herbivores. I used to fence and wrap all the vulnerable plants in my garden, until it looked like a refugee camp, but finally I decided to just grow stuff that could take the abuse that Mother Nature and her children handed out. The only exceptions are plants that I keep in pots on the deck in summer and store in the greenhouse over winter. Even those are at risk, since at these temperatures, the greenhouse heater can't keep the interior above freezing . The oleanders will probably suffer some die-back, and I might lose the fuchsias altogether. I've kept the cacti very dry, so I'm hoping they'll be OK, and the species cyclamen are all hardy enough to withstand a few freezes.

I'm actually thinking about saving some kitchen scraps for the deer. Would they eat limp lettuce leaves and carrot peelings?

Maybe you got the right idea June, not fussing with stuff.

Yes the deer will eat veggie and fruit, not citrus, scraps, they like cabbage, and are not too fond of fuzzy leaved stuff like radish tops. I know this because we used to feed them when we lived in New Denver in the Kootenays.

A deer jumped the fence into the back yard again last night and cleaned out the bird feeders, little bugger, and we had strayed with the blood meal too..

The deer have been eating the vegetable peels in my mulch pile so I know they like veggies! The ones here aren't so desperate 'cause our neighbor has been feeding them hay. I think they just like the plants in my garden better!

Your garden plants are probably like dessert to them.

And most people do not realize it, but Missouri has 5 Hardiness sub Zones - 5b - 7b.
My zip code is 5b - less than a mile to the Southwest it is 6a. I live in a well protected area, so I never worry about planting a Zone 6 plant.

Our coldest night of the winter was last night.
Got to minus 33 ºC and was below minus 40ºC (minus 40ºF) with the wind chill.

Brrrrrrrr..that is cold! It got down to -20c/-4f here and I thought that was pretty darn cold, don't remember the wind chill. Still only -9c/15F.

It was -27 here last night and suppose to be colder tonight. High of about -10 today and suppose to be a in the single digits minus tomorrow too. I don't know what the wind chill is but it's just darn cold!

Wind chill is how much colder it feels when you add the wind.

The good side of this is that some pests and diseases will be frozen out.
