I was sitting at a red light yesterday and saw this bloom coming up behind a wall. I could just barely see a few of the plants leaves, it was a basic green agave as near as I could tell. I got a pic right before the light changed. The blooms at the bottom of the stalk were swarming with bees and flies, it must have had a fascinating smell to them.

Wow!!! That's cool. Were you able to detect any scent? I guess if one's Agave blooms, you'd need a ladder to get a close sniff.

I am 99% certain that that is the bloom on Agave desmettiana since we have one blooming here as well. I have proposed your image for the database.

Really nice - I saw blooms on an A. geminiflora today, the bees were having a party....

I was at the same red light again yesterday and took another pic of the same agave. It now has a lot of small plants where the blooms were. I'm tempted to go and get one, although it is a busy street with no parking.

Update. I did stop and picked up 3 of the small plants off the bloom. Here's a pic of how they looked when I got them. I stuck them in a planter with a C. bivittatus 'Ruby'. One had what kind of looked like a bud on it but I thought that was unlikely and that it must be a new shoot.

Here it is today, it definitely looks like a bloom but not the kind of bloom that was on the mother plant. It's odd.

I saw one of these doing errands yesterday! I'll be able to go by it again in about a month, no idea how long this will take...

Love seeing blooming agaves Tiffany..though sad..it is a swan song..but it sure goes out with style Smiling

Jonna, maybe it is just going to make some new pups as well..sometimes succulents do that, growing a bloomstalk with buds and pups as well.

Planto - IKR! It looked like a clump of mama/some babies, so maybe not the end of the overall clump, but I wasn't sure. I didn't want to walk into someone's front yard to see more closely. I did a U-turn when I first saw it to go back & take pics, then another to go back on the way I'd started. LOL! If I happen to be able to go by when it looks like it has some ripe seeds, I may end up knocking on the door... I don't really want any of those plants, (DH already said NO thorny crud to mow around, and I sure don't want to do the mowing, so ain't arguing with that!) but would have a blast germinating the seeds, then finding homes for them.

Tiff,
It will just be the end of 'Mama,' you are correct in not the whole clump. She pups profusely as she blooms and then slowly passes away. Sad
