Cattleya walkeriana v. semi alba x sib ( I will be mounting this one tomorrow)
Dendrobium Burnan's Magic Bean pretty little Dendrobium with variegated leaves, in bud right now.
Sobennikoffia robusta good size plant, about a year away from blooming
Epidendrum porpax nice plant in a basket
Trichopilia tortilis and marginata, two nice looking plants

and a couple of sprouting bulbs of Pleione formosana

Next week - Silva Orchids Open House….

Great haul! I can not wait to see the walkeriana alba!

Sounds like you had lots of fun, Ursula. I'm curious to see the little variegated Den.

I will take some pictures tomorrow. The Dendrobium is truly a cutie.

Hmm, Dendrobium "Burnan's Magic Bean" seems not to exist. Oh Ten Shin Gardens!!??
It looks like a tiny variegated Den bigibbum to me. I wonder if the Burnan's should be Burana.

Looking in OrchidWiz, the only thing with "Magic Bean" in the name is a Phal or Dtps.

Thanks Jim. I don't think this is registered. Someone was showing a similar Dendrobium sold by Ten Shin as Burana Mini Beauty and that isn't registered either. I guess, I will write the name as "Magic Beans".

There are lots of "Dendrobium Buranas" registered including a "Burana Beauty". I would need a picture of the flower to take the search forward.

This is an answer to a question I received via Tree-Mail.

Spanish moss is indeed gray but when it is long-dead, it will turn black and be as fine as a thread. When it gets to this stage it holds no water. Since yours is still gray, it will hold some water, but not a lot of it. Now, if it is still viable, the moss will actually give off moisture, and my tropical plants seem to like have living Spanish moss adjacent to them. My orchids are no different. In fact, I have a large vanda who's roots grew into the moss that was hanging over the basket. For some reason all its roots have done this. One side of the basket is loaded with huge, stubby roots entwined with the moss and the other side has not a root. The basket is filled with coarse Douglas fir, medium horticultural charcoal, and chopped coconut fiber, medium chunks. I have not repotted this vanda in at least 5 years and perhaps 7-8 years. I know most of the Douglas fir has broken down but the vanda likes the way it is and I am not going to change its growing medium.

If your moss was bagged up, it is probably non-viable. You can pretty easily tell though. Dead moss will feel very dry to the touch whereas live moss will be soft, pliable, and slightly moist to the touch.

There is a Dendrobium okabeanum.

Thx Ken, I saw your vanda with the healthy roots in the Spanish moss, at this point after I hydrate the moss and give it light and air over the humidifier I think I can better eval if it is still viable. It's breaking off when handled and crunchy sounding. But it's worth a try to see if it will come back from the dead!
This is my first vanda purchase, and it's dry in the house only getting to 40% humidity with 2 humifiers going. My new purchase from Carmella orchids is Ascda Suksamran Beauty 'Bubblicious'.


It came as two separate tip cuttings with good roots, one is in low spike and the other has two rootless side growths about 6 in high, which I left on of course. I put both in the only basket I had, when they get new roots I should have some 4 in baskets for them.

Ursula, I enjoyed your society show pictures, especially the last one! I am in high anticipation to see your Silva pictures when they are ready!

Nice looking new plants, Bert. I've been having to humidify my indoors the last few days, since it's been very cool and dry here. Hanging wet towels around the area where the orchids are has helped a lot - so much so that I had the windows fogged up last evening! Luckily I have metal dining chairs with handy bars that the towels hang on nicely. I just wring them out so they don't drip and hang 5 or 6 hand towels around.

That Spanish moss in your picture above looks like some of it is dying but some will be ok. Just spray it with some warm water and give it some light. Wish I could send you some, it's falling off the trees around here.

Thanks Kathy, I looked at that, but I don't think that is it.
I took some pictures today, but didn't do too well capturing plant AND buds in focus. But - the spike is in the process of opening.

It really looks to me very similar to my Dendrobium bigibbum v compactum, just even smaller and it has variegated leaves.

And I mounted the Cattleya walkeriana today ( 2 small plants)

I have to say I am placing Ten Shin Gardens on probation - I understand that vendors wrap their bare root plants in Sphagnum moss, so they don't dry out during lengthy transport. But - when I take that new Sphagnum off, I really really don't wish to see old crappy Sphagnum underneath, and after removal of that, I do not ever want to see mushy - roots. Not cool in my book!!!

Ursula, C. Walkeriana is the one mounted Catt. that really does well for me, though it is a scale magnet. My C. Amesthyoglossa, also mounted, is barely hanging on. Of course my potted Catts aren't doing much better.

Carol, there is hope then. I will watch for scale!

Let Matt know about the roots on the walkeriana. He has been very good about replacements for me, especially if I tell him right away. Also get the scoop on the bean dendrobium's name! I want one of those! (Uh-oh. I seem to be very attracted to dendrobiums but I kill most! I would love to get a moniliforme (used to have 3). What medium do you use? watering?)

Kathy, about the cute little Bean guy - I just wrapped the roots loosely with some coconut fiber mixed with some Sponge Rok. Hopefully the roots will attach eventually to the claypot. Daily watering around here and this one will soon go into the bright light/uppermost rack under the ceiling, same as my Den bigibbum.
Regarding the moniliforme, I have a few of them and the best performer is my plain one which came mounted. This one flowers like bonkers this year. The second best is another mounted one. So for me, they seem to be growing better when mounted. (I need to mount my pink one…)

Just came back from the Show. I chatted with Matt a bit. Regarding the Dendrobium Burnan's Magic Bean - he agreed it was not registered and it seems to be a made - up name originating in Taiwan. Take it as such!
Now about the dead roots, he immediately pulled out money to reimburse me for the dead root-plants, but I waved him off, thinking/saying that the last growth will hopefully put down new roots. But I pointed out to him to check that new Sphagnum is not wrapped over old Sphagnum which surely will mean dead roots. He agreed.
