Lucy, Are you asking me or Laura about iris? Photo #5 is my next door neighbor whose entire yard is a blooming iris garden in spring...and she promised to share with me this year. I grow them in my small garden at home, as well as in the town community garden, which is in walking distance from my house, and of which I am an active member. So I guess the answer is 'yes' Hilarious!

Try some of the dwarf iris, they don't take up as much room. then next fall plant bulbus iris I. reticulate. We have some in the same bed as grape hyacynths.

Thanks for the info Lucy. Smiling I do have one dwarf-it's an early bloomer and I didn't get a photo--both years I was ill when it bloomed and not up to taking photos. I would love to have some more.
"bulbus iris I. reticulate"...I am not familiar and I will research this. I have a bed of lily of the valley and ajuga(I think) that bloom simultaneously every spring--beautiful combination. Would it go well in that bed? Maybe we could transfer this discussion to Garden Chat?

I don't know why the e instead of a. Iris reticulate are spring flowering bulbs instead of the rhyzome of the bearded & Siberians. They bloom about crocus time. Lilies of the valley might choke them out, but ours are planted on a small hill with muscari & the other bulbs. Daffodils and a couple tulips are in other places. They come in shades of blue or purple with a few whites. 'Harmony' is a great variety. Stay away from 'Natasha' as it doesn't last over a year.

I have only taken photos of our iris seedlings & those which we have introduced. the seedlings are on the computer as I wanted to study them over the winter. Now that I have the new camera I might do better on other plants. I am having trouble working the camera so will keep my trusty Pentax with me. Most of our irises are on slides. If the weather warms up so we are going out again we can see about putting slides onto disks.

I know iris like the sun, and do not like to be deeply planted, but I know very little about the growth habits, varieties, names of Iris. I have a lot of research to do. How does one keep the neighborhood squirrels and feral cats away from them? Blinking

Anytime that you see 'B' in the type of iris, it stands for bearded. TB are tall bearded, the most popular type grown.

We have no problem with cats or squirrels. Digging in the garden? Skunks are our diggers. More apt to look for grubs in the lawn.
