I have some of these in my yard I think. Well I haven't seen them bloom but the neighbor said she thinks they are 'blue' and they have been here at the house abandoned for quite a while before we moved in. So I inclined to think that is what they will be. At any rate, I had some of these in the past and would like to find more to plant in the front along the highway. They are a lavender color and if I remember right may have some sparkly dusting to them and they smell like grape kool aid and always bloom usually even if the weather has killed my other iris buds. If anyone knows the real actual name of it -I'd love to know!

Frilly -- why would the weather "kill" your other Iris buds? You live in Missouri, which is a moderate weather area...............?????

well it warms up too early and the iris makes buds and then it comes a freeze and kills them. Then they don't bloom.
I try now to buy later blooming iris. The early blooming ones-a good chance every 2 or 3 years they get frozen off.
Same here for our fruit trees, the peaches especially, they bloom too early and then get frozen.
This was for Lebanon mo, zone 5b. I never plant my tomatoes out before the weekend of mother's day, sometimes a week later to be safe depending on the weather. Last year it was JULY before we started having warm nights. Really cool nights/mornings and lots of rain.

Paul, I will look into that, thanks for a suggestion!

Species Iris (Iris pallida)

This looks like it!
Too bad the ain't a scratch n sniff feature on the database LOL

I find it interesting though that someone would not have commented on the scent specifically, in the database. It is a fairly remarkable scent, you don't forget it!

Polly sent me some of these, I think it was near November already, and I planted them and they survived and grew, but didn't bloom of course last summer. Maybe after she recovers from her recent surgery you can contact her for some.

well they are pretty prolific around this area, I think I could advertise on Craigs List that I want some and probably someone will give or sell me some cheap. I'm hoping to pick some up locally if I can. I need about 40 of them. I am planing an area 80 ft long in a row along the road. I have daffodils and surprise lilies there and I am hoping to add the iris and some stella de oro daylilies. I don't really love those, but they do bloom alot and don't require alot of care. I need something short too so I think this will make a nice row. Someday when I win the lottery I don't buy tickets for-I'm gonna put a white picket fence out there.

Yes, but I don't know for SURE if this one is it. ? I would have to order it from a grower specifically by name and then wait for it to bloom before noting the fragrance in the DB. Does anyone know for sure if this entry is the iris with the grape scent? I am sure enough that for now I am going to use the name on my personal photos I keep of it when I grew it, but not sure enough to add it to DB.

The "grape"scent is found, in varying intensities, in all of the cultivars of I. pallida. It's too early to say, without more info, which particular cultivar you may have. If you check the AIS Wiki, you will find quite a list of "possibles"..Arlyn

Frilly, I have pallida Iris, Grape Kool-Aid scent and all. Be happy to send a handful of rhizomes to you if you don't mind reimbursing the postage after delivery.

Thank you Debra for the offer. I may take you up on it this fall. Right now I am trying to put my yard back together after we had a back hoe come in and take out about 15 stumps, some of them were huge... so it's a mess Smiling But glad to get them out.

Yes -- I've had a couple of Irises that smelled like cat-pee too. Problem is -- I can't remember which ones, so I'll probably cut a stem or two and bring 'em in the house again. Glare Blinking
