Im thinking about making a little pond in my home
Coz i dunt have much lawn. Only small spaces with enough sunlight.

Any ideas maybe what kind of water plants ( must be asian water plant coz i lives in asia )are fit for small tub that put inside bigger tub
Really appreciate all your opinions everyone ♡♡

I already made one little pond filled with tropical water lily, dwarf cypaerus, java moss and water lettuce but i still want to make another small pond with different plants ^^

Beautiful container pond Hendrik Have you seen Arrowhead plants there? Sagittaria Latifolia? There is also a dwarf papyrus that looks nice in containers. I'd love to see pictures when you get it planted.

I had a lovely dwarf Lotus called "Baby Doll" that is a small enough plant to grow in a tub-size pond. They do need to be in at least 4 hours of sun per day to bloom well. I had to give up on mine because it bloomed in June, but as the sun got lower, it stopped blooming. The foliage is nice, but I really wanted more flowers.

@jonna : thanx jonna hehe ... i never see arrowhead here in my city but i will try to order in my fave local nurseries to look for it... i just see mexican swordplant here, both are almost same like plants. Am i right?

So sad that they are already death , can i ask to you how is the size of your pot for the baby doll lotus? (Diameter and depth) coz i will put it inside a bigger container again, im afraid it will not fit with other small plant

I believe that is the plant I have, not the arrowhead. The problem I had looking at the pictures of Arrowhead is that my leaves are narrower and longer although the flowers looked the same. I was also confused by the 'cold hardy' label as that sometimes also means that a plant grows better where it gets a dormant, cold period. I don't have any blooms open on mine right now but I'll take a picture of the plant so you can see it. It certainly makes sense that I would have a Mexican native instead of one from the northern US. Whichever it is, I do like the long erect flower stems with white flowers all along them. It blooms off and on all year, and spreads rapidly. The one I have in my large pond long ago jumped its pot and is naturalizing among some rocks at one end of the pond. I pulled the ones I had in the roof pond out and stuck them in a bucket next to the pond and they have bloomed and thrived there. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

I promised a photo and here they are, I'm a bit embarrassed by the amount of water lettuce in my pond. It never survived long before but this winter it has taken over. I think it will die off when it gets warmer and more sun, at least I sure hope it does.

Here's the arrowhead that has jumped out of its pot and is naturalized in the rocks at the end of the pond. It is looking a bit straggly now probably also because there is less full sun on the pond in the winter.


This is one bloom coming up from another batch that is in a pot but the pot fell off the ledge and is now in 4' of water. I haven't felt it was warm enough for me to get in there and put it back. I'm a wuss about cold water and the pond is now about 20° to 21° celsius or around 70°F.





There will be a lot more leaves and blooms when it is in full sun in the summer.

Hendrik - I love your little water garden in a container at the beginning of this post! That is beautiful!

Jonna - The state of Florida has prohibited water lettuce for sale because of it's invasive nature. How much that is enforced I don't know because I actually saw it for sale at one of the big box stores locally! Ha!

Hendrik, my little Baby Doll lotus was in a pot about 10in. across, and 8in deep. The lotus do need a fair amount of fertilizer to grow and bloom well. I let it die off because it didn't get enough sun in my pond, which is in the entry to our house and gets a max of about 3 hours of sun per day. So, as I said, in June (highest sun here) it got enough, but even though the leaves are lovely, only one month of bloom was a disappointment.

Jonna, with Becky. Not sure that water lettuce will die off in the heat, it grows like crazy here almost year 'round. Cold weather knocks it down, but it comes back. I'd roust it out for compost asap! Very invasive.

Hendrik - beautiful pond. I love the waterlily and the spikiness of the rush. What is that to the right of the rush?

Not sure what is for sale in your area of the world. Are you about a zone 9 or so? You could probably get something really gorgeous that we have never seen before in the US.

Water celery is pretty invasive here but it is good for the pond and I can cut it back to the rock. It did send roots down the outside of the liner deep in the rock and came back for two years. I am sending for more as I lost it on the last redo. TWL is great.

@jonna : yess its definitely different between arrowhead and mexican from the leaves shape. I dunt think my city have the arrowhead so i will choose the mexican one
Woww im so surprised with the water lettuce ... ucan kill them by drying them up in sun and can made into compost . Try it! ^^

@elaine : thanx for the baby doll lotus pot size information, i will try to look for it in my fave local nurseries , will use these baby as rooted plant on my 2nd water garden container if available ^^

@carolyn : i lives in indonesia which under the equator line carolyn and we dont using daylight saving time hereas i know... i believes too there are so many beautiful water plant in my country but it depends on the nurseries too they sell it or not

Tried water lily 3 times in both ponds and fish ate them up. That's an expensive meal. Want to try again but in a container.
