Hi all!
I'm wondering if any of you has had any experience taking cuttings from a Chinese evergreen. This plant has gotten leggy and is just not looking up to par. I know if I cut it back, I will/should have new growth. But it seems a shame to 'just toss' the tops. Any success in cuttings? This one definitely needs rejuvenation!

I don't know if the last pic used to be a top, or old bottom, but it's definitely a part from that pot.

Not sure though, of the best method…Did you just stick the top back in the pot? Or did you do a moist medium/perlite rooting? Can't imagine they'd start in water?

I've done both, sticking it in a pot, and in water. All props in the past few years have been directly to soil. How much were you thinking about cutting? With such long stems, I'd probably try to plant them in an "L" shape under the soil if they'll bend w/o breaking. One looks almost that shape anyway. Might pop up some new tops from the buried length of stem, if it's not too deep. Theoretically, every node can make roots/shoots, but IDK if Ags respond this way like some other plants can. It's what I'd try if I had the same long stems to work with. (Mine are all short because I do cut them off & start the tops so often, used a few bunches as landscaping in the ground last year.)

I was also thinking about how long some of the stems are. I know Dracaenas will start from laying a 'cane' on the soil/sand/medium of choice. And I'm thinking that the Ag may do the same. Thinking I may try a few different methods, and see which works best.
I think to begin, I'll just cut maybe half of them, see how they progress, and then do the rest of them. Hopefully I'll get several new plants from this one!

Heck I just remem-noticed you're way south of me. You could grow these in the ground even longer than me. It went so well doing that the past couple years, I'm putting many more plants, about all except the woody ones, in the ground this summer. They all grew really great & cut way down on the number of pots to worry about watering, getting too hot, blown around, full of ants, etc...

That plain green one doesn't seem inclined to bloom (maybe if I stop cutting its' heads off?) but the ones that look more like yours bloomed like crazy for a couple months. Not everybody's idea of easier, but I just scooped up the root balls, set in pots to wait out winter. Have you any spot to use the ground for cuttings? That's where I prefer to stick any cutting if I can.

The flowers aren't such of a much, like Caladiums, but seeing them, I know these plants are having a great time on summer vacation.

Great idea!!!! I'd not even given that a thought!!! Insert *head-slapping* here! I could really do without adding more containers to the deck.

Well, my cuttings did finally begin to root. I put them in moist perlite, and after about 3 months, I gently pulled them up out of the perlite, and they all had new roots! I've potted them up, and they're looking fairly happy.
