Bluestone Perennials (04/21/14)

CANCELLED

1 Agastache Firebird
1 Phlox Peppermint Twist
1 Phygelius Cherry Ripe
1 Phlox Orange Perfection

edited.... Bluestone had the Phygelius Cherry Ripe showing that it would be shipped in Fall, so I told them to cancel the whole order. I was disappointed in realizing it after submitting my order. It was the main reason I was placing the order.

Marilyn - Awesome lists! I am limited with money this year so I'm planting many Agastache seeds. I winter sowed several varieties of Agastache. I hope they do well. I'm also going to take cuttings from any of mine that return.

Marilyn, Would you mind giving us an update when you get your Morris Nursery plants?
They had a few things that looked tempting (and cheap) but I'm having to be stingy with the budget and don't want to waste $ on a bad company.

Have you ever ordered from Kartuz?

Thanks! Smiling

Sure! They're shipping next week. I hadn't ordered from them before, but found them while doing a google search for Porterweed (Stachytarpheta mutabilis). The prices were pretty good (they're starter plants), so I ordered 2.

Porterweed is a great (fantastic) Hummingbird plant! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Lovey dubby Thumbs up Red Porterweed (Stachytarpheta mutabilis) The color looks coral, not red to me.

I can't get it locally and the other place online to get it is Almost Eden, which is more expensive. I highly recommend it! Thumbs up I'm hoping that the plants will do great, so that I can count on them every year to get these gems! Lovey dubby

Edited to state..... Just found out that Accents for Home and Garden (Pepper's Greenhouse) (Milton, Delaware) also offers it for $4.95 for a 4 inch pot. Might have to check them out next year! They have some other Porterweed. Didn't realize this when I ordered from Morris.

I grow mine in large containers and plan to grow each of them in their own container this year.

Haven't ordered from Kartuz before.

Thanks, Marilyn! Big Grin
Yes, Stachytarpheta mutabilis was one I was looking at, too. Thunbergia battiscombei was another.

Someone gave me a Stachytarpheta mutabilis at a trade years ago and the hummingbirds loved it here too (and I loved the color!) I managed to over-winter it for a few years inside but then lost it. I actually have some old seeds somewhere around here, but they take a while to flower from seed. I currently have a purple Stachytarpheta that I overwintered in the garage and a brand new baby red Stachytarpheta sanguinea in my foyer hiding from the cold. I thought I lost my little S. sanguinea yesterday when the cold front rolled in. It only got to 46F but the S. sanguinea shriveled up like it was dead! After many hours inside, it has finally recovered. I was lucky to find the purple and red at the UGA Trial Gardens sale for $10 and $5, respectively, in gallon pots and best of all... no shipping!

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a pot a Pentas lanceolata 'Nova' that they had for sale. It was a bit pricey and I wasn't familiar with the name so I passed. Well, it turns out it was exactly what I wanted because it is one of the tall, old-fashioned Pentas that actually attract the pollinators. They are so hard to find too! Glare Sigh....hopefully they'll have it next year...

Hadn't heard of Thunbergia battiscombei before, but I'll look for it next year.

You're so lucky to be able to go to the UGA Trial Gardens sale since you're in GA. How far away is it from you?

The Thunbergia battiscombei isn't a hummingbird plant but it's really pretty!

The UGA Trial Gardens is not quite 2 hours away so it's a bit of a trip. (Luckily, I don't usually have to drive.) Athens has a Plantapalooza that day with the UGA Hort Club and State Botanical Gardens also having sales and local nurseries giving discounts if you visit the garden sales so you can make a day-trip out of it.

Have you ordered from Accents/Pepper's before?

Morris also has some sort of purple Stachytarpheta in addition to the pink.

Thanks for the info on Thunbergia battiscombei, might still get it next year. I tip my hat to you.

I'll vouch for the Porterweed as being a top Hummer and Butterfly attractor. I've grown Purple and Red, but my favorite is the Coral.

Danita,
I know what you mean about the Penta, I have the tall red variety also and it is marginally hardy here. Get's about 3 feet tall, and Butterflies, Bee's and even the hummer's use it.

Clint last year I winter sowed all those except Pink Pop. They all performed great! They all came through the winter just fine. But now several seem to be dying with the several hard frosts since the snow melted. Angry I have some seeds still so I may try to sow some this weekend.

But to console myself I ordered several of the Kudos line from mamajacks coop on cubits Rolling on the floor laughing
