I need a larger GH. I also need a spot where I can keep my Orchids protected outdoors in the nice weather. And a nice potting area. So I have this vision of a rectangular (16' X 12') Pergola off the side of my shed that will be screened. Then add panels to the sides & top when winter sets in.

Has anyone done this? I'm thinking the panels come 4 X 8 so could be attached/removed rather easily.

That will work fine so long as you are in a sub-tropical area. If you get below 50 F during the winter months, you would need some way to enclose that area. That is, unless you are growing cool-loving orchids, those that can handle temperatures into the 40's.

I have a large screened in patio, but there is a roof, not a pergola. In November I enclose that porch with clear, marine vinyl panels (4' x 6') and then heat that space. There are six panels total plus a 2' x 5' panel above the double-doors. Next fall I want to cover those panels with Solar Blanket material, to give it much better insulation value. I haven't figured out how I am going to do that, since I want to roll up the "bubble-wrap" panels when the weather is nice so that we can see out of the porch.

I plan to bring the Orchids onto the sun porch on the few COLD nites we get. I only have a doz or so. Just need a place to put my seedlings in the Spring.

I've not heard of marine vinyl panels. Will need to research that.

If you have ever seen a large yacht and it has a fly-bridge, it was probably enclosed in clear, marine vinyl. This stuff holds up to any weather, lasts for years and years, and is crystal clear. Generally businesses that do canvas work (awnings, etc) and automobile upholstering (near the coast-line) will use this and cut and even mount it for you.

Thanks for the info. I'm not far from the coast. Have a couple friends who have had boats. Maybe they can point me in the right direction.
