I thought I'd start a thread for March ... please share any photo's of the birds that you spot in your area of the world. My husband and I took a drive @ 45 minutes south to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge yesterday and I was able to get a couple of photo's.

At the visitor's center they have an area where they feed the birds. We spotted a few Painted Bunting's but there were a lot of other birds around eating seed too. The bunting's are a shy bird and flit to cover very quickly. This photo is a bit dark because the little guy flew to the shrubbery.

Painted Bunting, male:

After the visitor's center we went to the Haulover Canal area to see the Manatees (which always congregate in an area near the docks where boaters come and go) and there are always Vulture's in the trees in this area too; one posed for a photo.

American Black Vulture:

We have lots of Ospreys here in Florida; it seems to me the population has increased greatly the past five or so years because I rarely saw them in the past and now I see them all the time. This platform nest is near the visitor's center at the Nat'l Wildlife Refuge; someone said that both birds at the nest were juvenile's but I'm not so sure, they might have been adults. Another Osprey was flying overhead and the one in the nest began calling. Folks visiting the area thought it was a parent and the one in the nest was a baby calling to the parent but I've seen Osprey's act like that when they feel threatened. It could have been an adult telling another to stay out of it's nesting territory. The photo on right of the Osprey perched in the pine tree was taken at the Haulover Canal area. It's an adult that was only @ 6 feet from us on a lower limb of a tree by the water. The branch he was on was hanging out over the water and he kept looking down, probably looking for fish. The last photo I zoomed and cropped for a closer view:

Me too. Thanks for the new thread. Love the photos LIn especially the Osprey. Nice crop on that head shot; really shows the detail. Thumbs up Good job!

We have a pair of Carolina Wrens who began building a nest in an empty decorative pot right by the screen door to the back porch where we come & go all the time. This was the first day of nest building. Tomorrow or the next day I'll take some shots of the finished product. This is where we kept the Kong stick we throw for the dog so we moved that & placed one of dh's old flip flops on top of the pot to take the place of the dog's toy.

We put up 2 bluebird houses yesterday afternoon & by this morning they had both been claimed & nests are being built in them. Hilarious! That's pretty quick! We have a 3rd house but haven't decided where to put it yet. Guess we better get busy!

My zoom is only 5x on this camera so it looks really far but is not in real life; I just can't get close up enough with the camera. This is a dead tree the resident red shouldered hawks love to hang out in. The one on the right is the male & the left has to be a female b/c just before I snapped this photo; he jumped on her. Yep, it's spring! Hilarious!

Hurray! Hurray! WOOOO HOOOO ann. Such great news that the bluebirds found your boxes and are making nests already.

So cute about the wren. I do know that wrens build nests in all sorts of funny places. I have a pair next here each year but they nest in the wren boxes I have up.

Thanks everyone.

Ann: That is so cool that the Wrens are building a nest in the flower pot right next to the door. I wonder if they will continue the process and raise a brood since it's so close to the house and especially if your dog goes out there a lot. It should be fun to watch the progress of the nest building and of course any babies! The little ones are so cute. I left two of those purple martin condo type birdhouses in different parts of the backyard at our other house and the Carolina Wrens always built at least two nests in each condo but there would only be eggs in one of the two. I've seen wrens around here on occasion but no nests.

Oh and before I forget, I think your photo of that huge, beautiful oak with the pair of hawks is wonderful! I bet they are nesting nearby, possibly in that very tree.

Thanks LIn. The hawks raised a brood last year ~~~ there were 2 babies. I have no idea where they are now although the other day we saw 3 of them together so...... They serenade us from that dead tree all the time. They live here with us. Hilarious! But we love hawks as much as the songbirds.

My cousin has a wreath hanging on her front door & every single year a pair of wrens builds a nest in it & raises babies. Once the babies hatch, Kitty puts a sign out for all to see that they are not to come to the front door but instead to use the door to the garage. Hilarious!

I understand they build several nests & then choose one so we will see.....

Ann, I keep forgetting to ask ... what is that beautiful bloom in your avatar?

This Mockingbird was visiting a feeder late yesterday afternoon and about an hour ago I spotted a pair of Cardinal's, the female at the feeder and the male eating seed on the ground below:

Lin, Thank You! it's Earlicheer, a dbl. flowered miniature daff planted by the previous owner.
Here's another & no way to ID this particular one ~~ there are just too many that are so close in looks but that doesn't make me love it any less. You can see how tiny the blooms are by comparing with my fingers.

Oh Ann, I wish that were the case but they seem to work only as short season annuals here. I read the information at the link you provided and partway down the page it says: "The main dividing line for growing a wide variety of daffodils in Florida seems to be Gainesville" which I've been told before.

Oh that's right, I forget you're south of G'sville b/c you're only 100 miles from me. But G'sville is 45 miles from me plus you're on the coast which makes you warmer so add another imaginary 50 miles to account for that. Sorry Lin.

Yeah Glen, check it out. You never know until you try. Thumbs up
