At long last, spring is on the way. I have lots and lots of new growth on all of the roses and I have some buds, but not as many as in warmer years in the past.

The thumbnail photo is Jasmina.

My first roses to bloom after an unusually persistent winter are: Old Blush yesterday and Yellow Lady Banks today! All the rest are busy putting on lush new foliage.

My biggest Yellow Lady Banks, which covers three arbors and the garage roof appears to be thinning out at an alarming rate. I think the gophers must have found it. It isn't the kind of thing that could ever be planted in a gopher-proof cage. The roots must be massive.

So happy Spring is on it's way somewhere. Hilarious! Certainly no signs of spring here with melted snow still on the ground and another colds snap here. Last year I was pruning roses around March 15th. I doubt that will happen this year.

Well spring has been put on hold yet again. It was 23 here this morning with 20+ mph winds and supposed to be worse tomorrow.

Looks like there's sporadic bloom on the roses in San Diego right now. I'll head over to the huge rose garden at Balboa Park tomorrow to take some pictures. My high-tech daughter will help me post them with her high speed connection yay!
Hurray!

PPal - I agree I agree I agree Getting tired of the warm days, warm days, warm days COLD SNAP, warm days warm days warm days COLD SNAP. Pick a stinking season and STICK WITH IT!!! Either stay in the 60s or in the teens. Last Thursday it was almost 70degs. The high for last Friday was 14. GRRR!!! Today the high is supposed to be nearly 60, which is why we have a chance of SNOW again tonight. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Walked around my front yard this morning, there's some hints of some growing here & there, but doesn't do a damned bit of good if we keep getting these hard cold snaps!!!

Toni ...

A lot of my roses are leafing out, but the forsythia hasn't bloomed, so I think they will have a set back.

We are going to have more rain for the next two days. I am just hoping the highway will be open when I go down to the valley for my monthly shopping. I am not out of anything critical, but ....

Smiles,
Lyn

I think we're getting rain at home too, but we need it. I'm not one to hope for an early spring, because it seems that every time the plants leaf out early, we get a severe late spring freeze. On the other hand, we've had years where plants don't leaf out until late April, and we have 95 degree days in May with 40 mph wind. Tender leaves don't do well in those conditions either.
I have so much work to do indoors that I can't even start to think of outdoor chores!
The Balboa Park rose garden did not have many blooms yet, and the few that were in bloom were pretty beat up by the rain.

Yesterday it was 61. Last night we got 2" of wet sloppy snow. Best best best kind! Shoveled the slush onto some of my irises this morning from the driveway. Was hoping for more, but this was super wet stuff, so we got probably an inch of moisture out of it! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! We need it!!! Maybe it'll be like in '06 where we get 2' of super sloppy mush. Made for a horrible mess, but it SOOO helped with the drought!

Of these roses, which would be the best?
Colette
Mother of Pearl
Wedgwood Climbing rose (Austin)
Raspberry Kiss (aka Eyes on Me)
Luscious

I can probably fit 2 more in my suitcase tomorrow. Trying to figure out which two is driving me bananas.
I bought Anna's Promise, which really makes me happy.
My husband stayed home this trip and finished several remodeling projects, and that makes me even happier!
My mother bought 4 roses herself. I had to laugh when she asked what would happen if we got caught "smuggling" the roses home. I'm not sure she actually believed me when I told her it's totally legal to fly rosebushes home in your suitcase.
Her Austin climbers had such huge long roots that I had to bend them to fit in the big suitcase.
I'll be back out here in May for the ARS convention so maybe I'll be able to bring back more then. I bought citrus trees, too, and an olive tree, but I shipped them home.
The Lowes store here had a tree with Nectarine, Apricot, Prune and Plum all grafted on the same standard. I bought one for my daughter and one for myself. They were still blooming, and each part was identified. Amazingly, the price for that tree was only $17!!!!!! At home, those are $129. We were so excited about finding them that 2 other customers bought one. The clerk there really knew her trees and told us the chill hours for each tree.
If you live in San Diego, it's the store next to IKEA. They have one left, and they just got the shipment yesterday.
My other bargain was at Walter Andersen nursery, where roses in 5 gallon pots are buy 2 get one free. Sad thing is, I wanted 4, but I couldn't find 6 that I wanted, so I just got 3. Goofy logic, huh? Rolling my eyes.
