I have had chickens on and off most of my life and decided to get some chicks to raise this spring. Nice brown eggs were my original goal so I bought black and golden sex-linked and some barred rocks. Then I saw some gold and silver laced Wyandottes and decided I needed some pretty ones that are moderate layers. Then I bought a couple brown Leghorns, spotted Sussex, Welsummers. New Hampshire reds, and Blue Andalusians. Now have 24 and I only want 8-10 so will need to rethink my goal....eggs or pretty? What do you think?

I think they are all pretty! Like Welsummers for the really dark brown eggs. If you keep 2 of each, there's only 14, that's not too far off your goal of 10!

- And if you add a couple of Ameraucanas you can have blue eggs too!

I have had Ameraucanas and did like the eggs. When I say beauty I mean something like the coloring of a red laced blue Wyandotte as compared to the coloring of a black sex link. I agree Tom that they are all pretty except I am really not attracted at all to Silkies or Frizzles. I wouldn't raise white Leghorns either as I prefer brown eggs to white for no logical reason.

I have a mixed flock and I have to say the Wyandottes are the prettiest. Even their tail end is shaped like a big ol fluffy heart.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Here's a pic of my Blue Laced Red Wyndotte Rooster. I'm gathering his "offspring eggs" now to hatch.

I bought the brown Leghorns on a whim knowing they would lay white eggs. I was seduced by a picture of a brown Leghorn rooster in pictures on the net and secretly hoped one would be a rooster. *Blush* One of the New Hampshire Reds is getting a comb and acting feisty so he will probably go bye-bye soon. Pretty rooster Tom........

Well, I'm getting the temp regulated on the incubator, so now I'll have to see how many eggs I want to hatch. Whistling

Well, I have 47 eggs in it, hoping to get a few more Blue Laced eggs to add yet today or tomorrow.
