The snow has melted on my hugel mound. You can see the alfalfa meal on top, coffee grounds and a few filters, and snow chunks. Also, my main vege garden in the background.

That sure looks like a promising bed! It'll be covered in green plants in a couple months.

Living in the south didn't help us too much this year. We had frost yesterday morning, believe it or not.

Wow. Yes, that's why they say "average" last frost date! At least you have highs in the 70s now.

Well, 9'' of snow on top of the bed can only make those nutrients from the compost, coffee grounds and alfalfa meal seep down even more. Good thing I covered up my onion transplants (lying on the soil since the day after I put them in). I also planted some pea and spinach seeds, which I covered. At least it is supposed to be 50 on Sunday.

So...I mentioned before that I used dirt dug from putting in an egress window. I didn't think it was too much like clay, but I knew it was a little. Well, as it turns out, its consistency is very thick. It is about 1.5 feet deep. I dug down, and am going to re-construct in into two different beds. Most of the shredded leaves I buried show no signs of decomposition. I will discard most of the less-than-ideal soil, and start over with some high quality topsoil and compost mix on top of the logs, sticks and leaves. Back to the drawing board it is. I always say about gardening, "It's all an experiment!"

This won't be happening any time soon, as we have gotten 3.5'' of rain in the last 36 hours, and it is supposed to keep raining for two more days. First chance of sun in Saturday.
