So this year I would like to plant tansy as a companion plant and i just looked in the database but i had no idea there were so many varieties. Is there a specific kind I should get to use as a pest deterrent?

We grow the common tansy: Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) and it does really well for us.

I think tansys are a little bit like "Arsenic and Old Lace" the bugs stop in for a bite to eat and end up in the cellar. They poison their visitors.

Aha, I see I can grow from seed! I may have a source for the plant but in case that falls through it's good to know I can do seeds.

Around here many of the local nurseries carry it in 4" pots for a couple bucks. It should be easy to find. Thumbs up

Tansy is on our Noxious weed list in Washington State, horses and cows can die from eating some tansies. I am not discouraging you, because if it is not aggressive in your area, it is safe to grow. Here tho, you cannot plant it and you can not leave volunteers in the ground to go to seed for 100 feet from any properties around you.

Taking time to smell the roses.

Was invasive in my garden planted to deter suash bugs which didn't work. I now don't allow the volunteers to make seed. As hardy as dandelions here in the American Bottom.
I'm happiest when in the garden.

There are a number of tanecetums in the data base here.
It should be possible to find one which deters insects, but which is not invasive in your zone.
