I now have several Hosta starting to show their foliage, the first was 'So Sweet'. The second was some plain green ones I started from seed three years ago.

This has been an unusually long cold one. I think lots of people have had abnormally cold winters this year along with us. We usually have several melts in the winter but we didn't have any this year and we seem to be having a hard time warming up this spring.

The deer have been digging in a lot of the areas my hosta are so I'm a little concerned about what I'll find when things warm up.

Yes, bad winter for everyone! Lots worst than we ever had, even Florida was in shock.
If your hostas are dormant then at least the deer are not chewing them up. LOL. But with everything still under snow and ice they must be having problems finding food.
I read that the great lakes are 90% frozen and the ducks cannot get to their food, so many have starved to death. They will not know how many till everything thaws out.

It's funny because the ones in the ground are not showing any signs of life. LOL. Debra's are in a container also. My minis in a Whiskey Barrel are not showing signs yet. I also put a couple of baby hostas in there that were not doing well. Andrew and On Stage. I hope they do well this year.

Container hostas emerge first because the pots thaw much faster than the ground. I was checking hostas and the ground is thawed only about an inch, while smaller pots are completely thawed, and large pots are mostly frozen.

Those in raised beds also emerge earlier.

Okay! Now I'm really ready for spring! So far, all I've seen coming up is my Bleeding Hearts...but I've only got one bed cleaned off.

This will just be the second year for June in the garden, but even last year she did well. I will have some pics of 'Albo-Marginata' tomorrow.
Two have been up already for a while, always one of my first, but today I noticed a third one starting to show little pips. I swear that thing grew two inches today alone, wish I had taken some early morning photos and then taken some this afternoon, but I didn't. I know it is a very common Hosta, but for my money it is hard to beat, it shows early, blooms well in my garden, and seems to multiply pretty fast, and is showy with the white edges. I don't have a lot of Hosta but it was one of my first, if not the first, and it is still one of my favorites.

June is very special. Each one is different depending on how much sun it gets. You can have one on each side of the house and they will all look different. Great plant for the south, it is fine with a short cold spell. These hostas are called 'low chill' and are a good choice. My first one to peep is usually 'Sea Thunder', but I do not see it so far, Montana was in a pot so it got warmed up very fast and has grown a lot this week.

I have only tried about eight different hostas (not willing to water). June is THE most heat and drought hardy of them all, with Mighty Mouse a close second.
