@dave I see the Recently Shared Photos is now on the sidebar and no ad. Please don't tell me you did this a month ago, and I am just now seeing it.

You are the very first to mention it as far as I can recall, and I only did it on March 26th. Smiling It's a new feature that I'm experimenting with and I think it's pretty neat so far.

"Recently Shared Photos" - here's how it works:

You know when you post a new photo to the database, and it appears on the homepage along with several other recently uploaded photos. During the time that it's there, it gets seen by everyone and you start harvesting those wonderful thumbs. Smiling Well, since we get over a thousand photos a week, it's inevitable that your shiny new photo won't stay on the homepage for long, and consequently most people won't see it unless they dig deeper into the recently added photos (an action most people don't do.)

So, I'm experimenting with a way to make each person's photos more visible on the homepage for longer. So what it does it every minute the homepage will grab the names of all the members who have uploaded a photo to the database in the past 24 hours.

Then it takes that list of names, randomizes them, and takes 10 of those people. Then from those 10 people it takes a random image that they have posted in the past 24 hours, and displays it in the left hand bar.

This way if you upload a photo, you have a good chance it'll be on the homepage "most of the time" for the next 24 hours. If you upload 200 photos in one day, then those 200 photos will randomly be shown throughout the next 24 hours.

So far it's worked out pretty well. It's all part of my ongoing desire to give the new stuff to see as much exposure as possible.

Great. Photos could flash by and no lovely thumbs result.

Heh, I noticed this new feature a couple of days ago, but just figured it had been there all along and I simply hadn't noticed. Hilarious! I like it! Thumbs up

Good idea Dave. It is a little frustrating when a picture only appears for seconds then disappears when a large number are approved at nearly the same time. I often look to see how many are waiting in the queue and don't load pictures if there are a large number waiting. Is that a little obsessive Confused

Question please; how many of these photos are visible on the left side of the screen at any one given time?

I ask because as I scroll down I can only see two photos before the screen does a little 'jump' and puts my blue menu bar in place of the pictures. I tried reducing the size of the print on the screen, which allows me to see two photos and only a hint of the third photo.

Maybe I have too many items on my custom menu?
Thanks

The custom menu sticks and follows you down the page and covers up the images. If you only have a few items in the custom links then it's not that big of a deal but if you custom links takes up much of the column, there won't be a lot of space for the images to display.

Maybe I should disable the stickiness of the custom menu for just the homepage.

Oh, thanks. The photos are beautiful. And they don't 'jump' anymore.
I tried to count them as I scrolled but got stopped by the Spooned Daisy. What an interesting flower.

I have one issue with the new feature (newly shared photos).... I was at a friend's the other day, and pulled up ATP as an example to her of a website design style she might like to use for her business. she was VERY impressed with the sidebar menu, until I scrolled down and it disappeared.

One of the things I love most about the sidebar menu is that it follows you as you scroll down the page. With the recent photos, the sidebar no longer follows me when I scroll down the home page. Sad
