when is a good time to start my coleus seeds? I received some in a seed robin this past fall - not sure what kind they are.

I used to try starting these early in the season but they just sat around and didn't do much until the weather got hot, so now I wait until just a couple of weeks before temps are consistently warm. Overnight temps of 65 degrees or higher give the most satisfactory results here. I now start mine mid-May to the first of June, indoors, and then start transitioning them outdoors near the end of the month.

I planted a whole packet of commercial seed last year. As normal, nothing germinated. All seeds except daylilies and radishes and tomatoes hate me.

Chelle - sounds like I am about a month early. I suppose that doesn't surprise me. Typically I am quite anxious for the gardening season to start.

Glen - was the commercial seed coleus seed that you didn't get germination?

We always did well with our coleus seeds. Jack started them in early to mid April.

I'm the same way, Carolyn. That's why I started looking around for seeds that I could start in cooler conditions, too. It makes it easier to hold off on the others. Big Grin

Arlene,

How warm do you keep your seedlings? I'm guessing they're growing in a consistently warm room on a heat mat?

They get the same basement temperature as all other plants we had down there - 60 to 65 degrees.

your basement is warmer than mine, although I have a little green house with lights in my spare bedroom. Right now, I have the dahliaetta tubers starting. Perhaps I could start the coleus seeds in that?

You probably could do that, Carolyn. Buy a cheap thermometer (flat bottom - not curved) and stand it up in the little greenhouse and you'll see how warm it is in there.

Okay I will try and succeed this time after failing dismally with seed last year.

Here is the new packet and the instructions. Are they good enough?
