I found a flower stalk on one of my bearded irises. I bought the irises from a plant sale last year and this is the first time I've grown bearded irises in my garden.

Good for you Cameron! We'll be looking for pics of the bloom when it opens. Do you know it's name?

Cameron, I've seen some of the photos you posted from around your place and you have LOTS of room for more Iris! {{heh, heh, heh, evil enabler laugh}}

Thanks so much everyone! I've seen so many beautiful iris pictures on here and I'm always in awe. I bought two types, the lady at the plant sale said one had light purple blooms and the other had a darker purple bloom and that they bloom a second time in Fall. That was the only info she could give me Hilarious! I'll definitely keep everyone updated on the blooms. Thumbs up I'm so excited about it. Hurray!

LOL I wish I did have room for more but now that I planted several flowering plant seedlings, I'm always reminded how little space I have. The sunniest side of my house I'm afraid to do any digging. For years I was worried I would cut through some underground cable so part of my yard is wasted because of that fear.

Call DigTess at 811. They will come out for free and tell you where the cables are located. I had them come out before I moved a tree-form Rose of Sharon to the curb-side strip.

Just an FYI, after they come all tell you where stuff is, you can still dig. Hand tools only. I have beds over my lines and have never had a problem. I can't wait to see your blooms!

You're right Celia, I didn't think to use just hand tools. I forgot iris need to be planted shallowly. I found two bloom stalks on my other iris plant. Thumbs up

That's another thing I love about irises Cameron. You don't have to dig a hole twice the size of the pot, etc, etc, ...if you start with good soil you just dig down to put the roots in and make sure the rhizome is only half in the soil for my area. I cant wait to see the bloom you will have. Remember to take pictures and post them here. smiles

I'll definitely have to amend my soil because its mostly clay, maybe tiny pockets of silty clay and sandy loam. With my current irises the soil keeps covering the rhizome which is really annoying lol. I'll definitely take pictures once the blooms open. I'm watching the flower stalk like a hawk Hilarious!

I'm making a new bed this and planning for more iris. I divided all of mine 2 years ago but a couple got missed.
