I'm quite sure that almost everyone has at least leaves by now, if not blooms! I'm lucky that I have green on my canes right now, considering we're supposed to get another 2-4" of snow tomorrow!

I got in a Michigan Bulb catalog in yesterday's mail. I haven't ordered from them in years, but they still keep sending me catalogs. So I just rummage through it, creating a wishlist that I'll order from some place else or see if I can find locally. Found 3 roses that I just HAD to have!

Blue Satin - http://www.michiganbulb.com/pr...
Dark Dragon - http://www.michiganbulb.com/pr...
Shamrock - http://www.michiganbulb.com/pr...

Then you actually *read* the listing and come to find out that... well, none of these are what Michigan Bulb are labeling them as! "Blue Satin" is actually Blue Girl, which I have a number of; Dark Dragon is just Purple Tiger, which I have as well & doesn't look half as dark as their picture; and Shamrock is just St. Patrick, which is yellow here in CO and never ever ever shows green.

False advertisements?

Oh well, so here's a Picante to brighten everyone's day!

I rather suspected a little color enhancement too.

Yep. Spring's here. It's hailing, and the satellite is out, which didn't matter anyway since the new "weather Nation" that replaced weather channel was still saying it was 70 and clear a whole 15 minutes After the national weather service issued a severe warning because of the wall cloud and hail.
Probably if I still had weather channel, they would just be playing an old storm stories show and ignoring our weather conditions.
We need rain so badly. My poor flowers. aaargh.

Isn't it amazing that with all the modern scientific satellite technology, the weather forecasts can still be so wrong?

PPal - It's not the satellites, it's the ground that causes things to be cattiwonkie. What happens with Cindi in specific is that we have storms here that build up in the mountains here in CO, gather up heat from Denver, then blow like mad through the eastern plains into Kansas, where it picks up moisture from the Gulf stream coming up from Texas, and because the heat is trapped in the storm, it attracts the cold from the Arctic fronts which causes the massive hailstorms there. But, there's so many variables that the meteorological computers just can't figure out exactly WHAT'S gonna happen. They can give good probabilities, but absolutely no certainties. There's a meteorologist here who has the best temperature forecasting abilities. He promises a "30 degree guarantee", which means if he says that it'll be 60 degs, there's a chance that it can be anywhere from 30degs to 90 degs, which pretty much covers everything. For instance, I've been under a Winter Weather Advisory for the past 4 hours. That's why it's like 40degs out there. Sure, we *might* get some snow, but I doubt we'll get the "up to 6inches" that they're predicting we *might* get. Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes.

I got a few forsythia blooms! Yay! That means that spring really *is* here!! Just not overly springy yet...

But I got all my mulch moved!!!! took about 14 hours to move 24 cubit yards by hand, but it got moved!!

Crying Toni I wish I could bring you my tractor. We could make quick work of moving that mulch. Thumbs up
Are you mulching on top of your winter mulch? Or did it break down or blow away already? It's surprising how fast it disappears here.
The problem with the satellite channel Weather Nation is, as Weather Channel explains it, they only get updates every 15 minutes, and it looked like the station was unmanned last night. That's exactly what Weather Channel was saying would happen when they were whining about getting booted from our provider. But none of it matters if a storm knocks all satellite power out anyway, does it? Which is what happens every time we get a storm. Oh I miss having cable. My husband was in Ft Hood last night and he had weather channel on, and he said they were airing some dumb fake documentary and weren't even talking about the storms.
Our local forecasters are really good. If they can't interrupt a show, they'll put trailers at the bottom with info specific to neighborhoods, even.
Anywaaaaay, back to roses.......since it's muddy out, I'm thinking maybe just maybe I'll load the dogs in the car and take a road trip to my favorite nursery. The devil on my left shoulder is pushing me pretty hard. The angel on my right is pointing out that I have not planted all the multitudes I have already purchased this year, and since I have not finished all the spring pruning, I don't know how many or few died over the winter. I made a promise of "no new beds" but my loophole is I CAN replace anything in a bed that didn't make it.
I'm wanting Always and Forever, Love & Peace, Tahitian Treasure, Austins Heathcliff and Tranquility. And maybe Henry Fonda or Lavaglut. and either Tuscan Sun or Vavoom. They have Dark Night, which is a russet that's been on my wish list as Garden Director Bartje Miller. That about cleans out my rose budget for the next 5 years. I'll get Raspberry Kiss and Mother of Pearl at another nursery, and then I'm really done. Really.
nodding
I do have to whittle that list down, any suggestions on which to keep or not? Group hug I love them all but I can't have them all, help?

Snow snow snow SnOW sNow SNoW sNOW SnoW snoW!!

We got wet mushy gooshy wet stuff! 4-5" and still coming down!! This will REALLY help wake up my yard! I found, when I moved the last of the mulch last night, that one of my itty-bitty forsythias was in bloom, but I think that particular plant is retarded or something. Not it's fault.. I accidentally chopped it down to the ground a few years ago when I was weedwacking.. *Blush* My bigger forsythia still isn't in bloom yet, nor have I seen any of the others in the neighborhood in bloom yet, and that's what I wait for.

Cindi - Can't use a tractor to move the mulch.. the roses are way too close together. I don't have a large plot like you do.. just a little city lot, so had to move everything using two of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ster... But it's OK, I'm fat & I need the exercise! LOLL!!! I'm just plopping this on top of the old mulch as most of it has either decomposed or blown away.. mostly decomposed. Some areas have decomposed 100%, others have less than an inch left, so it was time.

Funny how forsythias look even brighter on a foggy day. Mine is just glorious today.
The rain gauge blew over in the wind, so I'm not sure how much rain we got last night. Enough to make mud, not enough to soak the deep roots. Snow would be nice, would buy me some more time! I have indoor projects to finish before I can go outdoors!
After pulling back mulch on roses I thought were dead, I'm going to revise my assessments. Many of the roses I planted last fall have 2" of live cane, so they go into the mostly dead category. Some really are dead, and look dried out instead of frozen. I learned a lesson on Palatine plants. It's better to plant them in pots in the fall, and keep them in the garage over winter instead of planting outdoors in November. Spring shipments didn't work because some don't break dormancy, or some years, we get hot temps and wind and that kills them. If I had a sprinkler system, I could mist bare root roses several times a day, and would have much more success in spring. The potted roses look much better than even the established roses. I say potted, but I was lazy and put 4 roses together in a rubbermaid tub with good potting soil, and they seemed to like that.

It's kinda discouraging when I cut out all the dead canes on a couple of climbers and realize the only green canes left are Dr. Huey. Crying
We have one more night in the lower thirties, and then I can put out a few veggies, and probably plant the roses that have been patiently waiting in tubs.
Today it's cold and windy. Tomorrow is supposed to be a perfect gardening day, but I'll be spending the whole day selling plants in a mall parking lot. Rolling my eyes. My feet are aching in anticipation.
Rita, I can't get over how many crocus you have blooming, wow! For some reason, mine have taken the year off.

Just love this eBay auction..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rose-B...

This is a bodybag rose that the person probably found at Home Depot. How do I know? Because one of the body bags I bought a few weeks ago is a Blue Moon and mine looks a bit better than this one. But buying a $7.95 body bag & then selling it for $23 on eBay, plus shipping.. gotta love that! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Not to mention the picture of the bloom..
