I would normally post this in the plant ID forum, however being the plants are only seedlings I thought this might be the best place to ask. The plant with the two longer looking leaves I believe to be Cosmos, the other plant could possibly be Cleome. I had both of these planted in this bed last year and now have hundreds of seedlings popping up. I don't want the weeds to get a head start so I would love to pull them if they are not actually flowers. Anyone familiar enough with seedlings to recognize them?

I'd second the guess on the possible cosmos seedlings, but the other one isn't jumping right out at me. It looks like they're close to getting true leaves, so it probably won't be too much longer before you'll have a good ID. Smiling

I don't know about the second but the first is definitely cosmos. I have some just like it
I have stuff that looks like the second but many seedlings look alike before true leaves. I'll stay tuned.

Most of those are cleome, but I don't think the second one is. That one looks more like tree seedlings to me.

Do the birds roost directly over this spot?

If so, this could be 'bird gardening' and no telling where the seeds came from or what they may be. That being said, I generally allow this type of seedling (by the birds) to grow at least until I identify it as it may be a jewel of a plant for free.

I'll watch for the next batch of photos. This is fun. Hilarious!

I don't see birds actually roosting over this spot, but there are some large power lines running directly over this area. Birds do land on them, but I have never seen them actually roosting, some individual birds mostly on the power lines. This is very near a wooded area and a stream. A fence is right next to this bed, so there are plenty of birds in the area, and lots of opportunity for them to do a little...gardening.

Ok, I'll wait a couple of days and take some more photos, what I felt sure was Cosmos had me completely fooled so in a few days it may fool me again.

These dang things just won't grow enough to make much difference in how they look, I am going to start pulling the Cleome as soon as I post these pictures. I still have no idea what the other seedlings are. Don't think these photos will add much but it is worth a try.

They look a lot like ash trees. If you find some that are just emerging, I'll bet you'll be able to see the seed.

Ok, assuming it is an Ash tree, how long would it need to grow before it could be identified? I pulled up hundreds of these today (I saw no seeds on any of them, but at the time I was not looking but if any of them had a seed attached I never saw one). I pulled all the Cleome plants but just a few, and I transplanted a few also. I pulled all the little tree looking plants but one clump which I left in case it turned out to be something I wanted. If it is agreed they are indeed little trees I will go ahead and pull them, I don't need any tall trees growing under the power lines.

Pokeberry = Pokeweed?
Pokeweed (and all North American Phytolacca spp.) have alternate leaf arrangement.
The seedling true leaves are opposite.

That the seedlings seem to be everywhere is typical of ash, and even if it is not, they must be a common plant. Green ash seedlings (the only species I am familiar with) normally begin making compound leaves by their third or fourth set of true leaves. By that time, also, a woody stem should be unmistakable.
