I was thrilled to see last years Trichosanthes coming back up! Also the seeds I sowed are starting to come up as well!

I honestly didn't think the one in the ground would survive this 'Polar Vortex' winter. February was definitely a Zone 7 bordering on Zone 6 winter. And it IS very exciting to see stuff coming back up .. I was doing the Happy Dance yesterday when I saw my Indian Pink, Spigelia marilandica appearing through the leaves .. thankfully the neighbors are used to maniacal displays by me during the growing season.

wow .. it came back in the ground outside... I didn't think it would ... the slightly different ones I have from Singapore seeds are up... I planted maybe a dozen seeds and got 3 to sprout.. they are about 4 ft tall under a 400 watt HPS light .. they do seem to be poor geerminators... so you got seeds from one of the gourds they make... did you need a male and a female plant then to get the fruit
GOD.. ice and snow here now... temps at freezing... but it is so icy it's just building up

I got my seeds from Horizon Herbs. Because of the poor germination, that's why I bought 4 more packets because I'm determined to get a male and female plant. I planted 32 seeds and got about 50% germination. I really need to get these guys planted in the ground but we're in the midst of a brief return of winter.

Oh...I see where the seeds came from...I'll order more today.. Well my plants were indeed at four ft... But that was the last time I looked. One was up to 8 feet this morning... I had to unpinned the tendrils and get it back down around the trellis... The tendrils long and thin not only wrap themselves around anything..and into any crack... When they do ..or are just against something the tendrils stick to I it .., like they are glued in place.. Like an ivy...

Sure .... it is a good trellis. I get a bit of bamboo... then split it down the length of it... I put a chesil aganst the end of it... then rap it lightly with a hammer ... this gets a crack started ... then I twist the chisel and it opens wider ... I push it down the length of the bamboo opening twisting and sliding it lower... till it is in two pieces.. for the cross piecces I split it again after I cut it to the length I need..then I attach it with the plastic wire ties from the electrical dept at home depot... they run aboit 1.5 cents each.. in bulk ..I have cross pieces to the three uprights.. as well as diagional ones to keep it from racking..[twisting].. it makes a structure like the antenne poles...sometimes I use 4 upright poles.. this one was 10' tall... for some grafted tomatoes... they got to the top of it last summer ... oh the picture of that one is on the i-pad and in the next post
