Dave, What's your take on this news? http://news.yahoo.com/heartble... My son called me while I was in mid tax filing to tell me about it. I use IE and Yahoo.

The IRS uses 3rd party vendors for US e-file. No way would they take down their site for any reason anyway. I don't worry since all of my personally identifiable information has already been hacked from gov. servers anyway. Angry That said, I refuse to e-file-- the IRS doesn't like that of course.

Don't log in to your financial bank's website until you have received confirmation that their servers are protected. At this moment I'm assuming every bank is vulnerable and I'm not logging into my own bank or paypal or any other financial site until I am satisfied they've taken the steps they need to take to fix the issue.

That's not what I wanted to hear! My files were accepted, but does that mean the refunds will make it into my bank account? Scary stuff! Hoping Dave will chime in on this, even though it isn't plant related.

No, your data reached the destination.

There is a very, very small (but real) risk that while conducting business on that website, personal information could have been leaked from your computer to bad guys on the internet.

It's a small risk, but it's there and it's fixable. I'm dismayed that so many institutions have not immediately fixed this. All they have to do is upgrade their openssl software (extremely easy to do) and generate new private keys (not as simple, but very doable.)

At the moment the secure web is unbelievably fragile. I'm not sure when I'll log into my bank again.

And as a side note, if you're using IE you should seriously consider switching. These days I recommend Google Chrome.

I don't do online banking, but I do pay bills online. How can we find out which companies have upgraded their software?

Question please. @dave, you said in the post above that these days you are recommending Google Chrome. I thought you recommended Firefox? Has something changed?

Either way, I know I need to stop using IE. What's the best replacement? Please help this poor village idiot. Rolling on the floor laughing

I'd like to know as well, if and what about Google Chrome might be superior to Firefox?

Firefox and Chrome are both excellent browsers. Chrome happens to be MUCH faster for me, so that's why I use it. I can't bear to use a slow browser and Firefox just isn't fast enough anymore, alas.

Yep, I was having slow issues with FF too and last week I finally switched to Chrome, much better. Alas, my laptop crashed shortly after that, not due to the browser of course, and I am currently on Safari with my IPad.

Once Chrome copied over my Firefox bookmarks, the only difference I could tell was that it was faster! That's how similar the two browsers are to each other.
