In 1959, in a vote for the state of Queensland's floral emblem, Cooktown Orchid Dendrobium bigibbum var. phalaenopsis won but this excellent native that also is a great garden plant came in second: GREVILLEA BANKSII Red Silky Oak.

There is much debate about whether or not it is native to Macleay Island. Strangely, the experts think it is while the locals think it isn't. I have three self-sown. Two are white-flowered and one is red. This is a natural occurrence but, in patches throughout its range, you usually get a predominance of just one colour or the other. Mine have just stared flowering in the last week. The red flowers, unfortunately, are high up. None of the flowers will last long once the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos spot them.

That is strikingly beautiful! I can see how it made it to the vote!

I agree Odd, that the experts say its native and the locals say it isn't!

Those cockatoos don't allow anything prettier than them to survive.

I guess you should be glad the experts think they're native, because if not, "experts" can do some very strange things. In California, they cut down every eucalyptus tree in a park because they weren't native. I believe Jack London had brought them over from Australia and planted them. It's very shocking to go to a park, and thousands of trees are cut down. I never went back, don't know if native trees started to grow.

Anyone else have wildflower pictures?

That's crazy about the Eucalyptus trees! Go figure!? Did not know that about the cockatoos either.

Everything is coming along slower than usual this year...

Is it Senecio fluviatilis or is it lower to the ground than S. fluvatilis? Maybe Senecio ampullaceus?

Texask, it can be eco-cleansing - similar to ethnic cleansing. For some people, if you aren't native you are snuffed.

We have managed to get some changes here. Weedy environments are sometimes all that there is now for some species. The native habitat is gone or severely reduced. Habitat rehabilitation now has to take this into consideration. Attempting natural can be wrong.

Some populations of introduced animal and plant species now are critical important populations because of the decline of those species in their countries of origins.

Trees (such as the eucalypts you mention) can now be registered as of cultural or heritage significance and subject to Vegetation Protection Orders.

The following will never change, however: it is vitally important to conserve native vegetation.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Truly, I can understand that state and national parks are supposed to be native. Still didn't eliminate the shock of seeing that. And, now that they charge for parking and visiting parks, I no longer go. They're not using my money to support that.

Love all the wildflower pictures. For those of you without bird problems, I'm posting a picture of an area in my front yard. It has a stand of trees roughly in a circle. So, I put a 6' wire fence around it and planted wildflowers in there. This shows how far into the fence my chickens can reach, and what they can do.

Thumbs up So true, Glen!

Tee, I've been thinking it's Senecio ampullaceus! It's native here in this area. I need to re-visit the ID forum, I think we were heading that way. Thumbs up
