I am not sure why this hosta died in the middle. Does anyone know what the possible cause could be? This is a pic of how this hosta is growing back this year. I really need to move this one and a couple of others they get to much sun in this location. Just not sure what is wrong with this one and if it will grow back? Thanks for any help!

Could it be crown rot? You seem to have small divisions around the edge of the plant so I think you could dig it up and divide the healthy ones.

Very mature hosta do this as do other perennials like iris and ornamental grass etc. The old centers just die out as the new growth is on the exterior of the clump. Not a disease problem but it needs to be divided. Replant the most vigorous healthy starts from the exterior of the clump.

None of my other hostas have this (thank goodness!). I was hoping to split it into at least two plants, just hoping it would survive. It looks like that outer part is doing okay. Have never had any do this before, so was not sure of the cause.

You could remove 2/3's to replant, leave thee other third and take out a few shovels of soil from the old center and replace with some new soil. The plant will then grow back in to the improved area and you can divide the part you dug up and replant..

Great advice! Is it an older plant? I heard of this happening with Dahlia's because the mother tubers will die out.

Yes, it is an older plant. It has been planted there for 4 years, at least. I can't even remember which type it is. Any guesses?

The leaves look pointed and wavy to me. But does not really look familiar. Do you have a close up? Can you gather more information like measurements, color and shape of flowers and when does it bloom?

I think I found it. It looks like this one from the data base. Hosta (Hosta lancifolia).

Cat, a four year old hosta is not old. The problem is that this hosta lacked nutrition.

Mix alfalfa with 75% water and side dress your hostas. When planting new hostas, use this mixture to amend the soil and you will not experience this problem for at least 10 years, if at all.

Well, yes I guess that is true. Just really meant it was not a new plant really. I have other hostas in the same bed and they are all doing fine. I am moving them all anyway. I hope that moving it to a better (shady) and bigger location will help.

Oh, yes that does look like it! Bingo!! I did not think 4 years was very old. LOL. I throw down a top dressing of alfalfa and it is cheap too! I get the pellets, they dissolve fast. I also like Milorganite, it keeps some of the critters away like rabbits and cats. I heard it is not a good idea to use it if you have a dog, they love the smell and will roll around in it. LOL. (the hostas really love it)
Also August is growing season for hosta roots so I hook up my hose end sprayer and give them a good dose of Miracle Grow.

Well I guess I will get the pellets. I do have a dog and I don't want her rolling in anything. She does that enough on her own as it is No need to tempt her. I had read something online about Milorganite and was thinking about trying it so I am glad you posted that about the dogs. Hope I don't sound like a total idiot but where do you get the alfalfa pellets? Hardware store, farm store?

If you don't have a feed and seed store, try Tractor Supply! They are in nearly every town now.

Yes, we got a 50lb bag at the Tractor Supply last year for around 12 bucks. I think you could find it at a farm store or feed and seed store also but call them first.
