I made a cold frame from an old sliding glass door. The 2 doors are only an inch different. So I built the frames the same size. My evil plan is to make 2 cold frames and 3 raised beds. All the same size. In a row with landscape fabric and pea gravel. I'll skirt the whole thing with 2 rows tall of 8 ft. long landscape timbers.

Here is the first frame with a tray of mixed tomatoes and peppers.

Here it is with a small ham added.

I had not thought about using a sliding glass door a cold frame top, I have had my eye out for showers doors though. I love using stuff like that in the garden.

Just make sure it seals. There is a lip along the edge or some sliding doors. I ground mine off. Weather strip the whole thing if you don't have a shop full of tools.

What a great way to repurpose those sliders and shower doors. You should submit this as an Idea.

Storm doors work too. Anything that let's in light with a flat frame will work. You just need to build a box to match the edge of the frame.

Hah! That tickled me, homeshow/phillip!

I used a sliding glass door years ago for a cold frame. The thing was so heavy though I ended up making a ballast for it. I put a cedar post in the ground on the hinge side of the door and put a pulley on the top of the post. A cable went down and connected to the opening side of the glass door, up thru the pulley and down the back of the post where the "ballast weight" was an old plow I'd had laying around. It worked great, so great in fact you could lift the door open with one finger. I also remember on windy days I had to prop the weight up on something or lock it in place 'cus the winds would too easily open the door.

Nice looking box you've built there. Have fun!
