I recently put together this small frame with screening over the top. Every time I clear any new space for bulbs, seeds, or plants the squirrels take it as an open invitation to come dig. I have planted several things recently and just as soon as I turn my back those darn squirrels are out there digging it up. Seeds planted directly in the garden don't stand a chance of surviving.
So I figure this should at least give the seeds a change to sprout before they get transplanted or destroyed.

I like the idea of portable protection with firmly fastened edges.

I use chicken wire weighted down with bricks. However, if the squirrels were hungrier, they could easily sneak or burrow under the edges.

I think that I'm deterring more cats than squirrels. Too bad the cats don't chase the squirrels away!

This one is only sufficient to dissuade cats:

This was intended to keep cats away, but was totally ineffective. Maybe if they had been blackberry branches with big thorns, the idea would have worked:

This worked. I just had to remove it or arch it up before the seedlings grew through it too much. I named it Stalag RB 1.

This year I obtained some high vented tops that fit the standard trays.
I am planning to use them as protection for some direct seeders in the ground.
I am thinking that if I put sticks through the vents, then they would be held down against the wind and the critters.
Also have some clear "hot caps" to place over plants. The bunnies here have voracious appetites.
The squirrels dig, and so do the magpies.

I've been saving tall clear sandwich-tray-covers from lunch meetings at work. I like the idea of venting and staking them down!
