I planted 3 burford hollies last summer and they looked ok over the summer. The neighbors goats got out a few times and trimmed them Sad but nothing much. I kept them watered. We had a bad winter. Now they have lost all their leaves which turned brown. Some of them still have green coloring on the stems. Are they gonners?

If the stems are green, and the terminal leaf buds aren't burnt out, then it should push new growth this spring. Broad leaved evergreens got hammered this winter. As it is, my Nellie Stevens hollies lost most of their leaves on their south facing side. They might look a little weird for a little while but I'd say wait and see what happens before making any moves.

I checked on these today and even though they looked horrible a few weeks ago and lost all their leaves, they are sprouting new leaves! I am just keeping them watered and it looks like they are going to come out of it!!

Hurray!

That's great news!

Mine are sporting some burnt leaves, too, but the worst one was plenty large, so I needed to trim it back anyway. I'm also shaking the dwarf evergreens every time I walk by...seeing all of those brown needles really gets to me.

Buford Hollies are such slow growers. I want to severely cut our down to about half the size. But fear what they would look like for years to come!

are there any hollies that grow fast? I just bought these because I found them on a clearance rack and they looked so nice. Of course after the bad winter, and the neighbors goats eating them down, they are only half the size they were. But now I didn't think the goats would kill them, just more of a pruning. But then the leaves that were left turned black and fell off and it just looks like dead twigs. They are starting to sprout out now, slowly but definitely still alive. I would say they are a foot tall. Sad I planted these between me and the neighbor hoping to create some privacy.
