Which Daphne plants are evergreen that flower for a long time, and are very fragrant. I live in zone 8 so I plan to put them in pots, and in a place that has shade from 2 until 5pm.

Hi Timothy. Are you talking about Daphne odora? There are several varieties: D. odora f. rosacea has white and pink flowers, D. odora f. rubra has dark red-pink flowers but is not as fragrant. There is also D. odora 'Aureomarginata' that has leaves with a yellow edge. Daphne can usually take part shade.

Welcome Timothy. I live in the Pacific NW Zone 8 and my D. odora 'Aureomarginata' is technically evergreen but it gets really ratty looking over the winter. Most of the leaves either drop off or are very droopy looking. Once it blooms in spring, then the leaves make a come-back. It also grows in a very rangy manner, which I've tried to correct by pruning, not very successfully. If it weren't for the intoxicating spring fragrance, I'd probably yard it out. Mine is in part-shade - northeast side of a building, so sun until about mid-afternoon. Good luck with yours.

I also read a review about a compact Daphne, 'Lawrence Crocker' which is a prolific bloomer, dwarf plant (1' mound) so would be good in a container, tolerates full sun, and will grow in pure sand. I've been on the lookout for this but haven't yet located it.

I realize this is kind of an old question--don't know if the OP is still looking or not--but there are a lot of great smelling, smaller daphnes to try

What charming little plants!

I would like to buy a daphne plant...or 3 lol.. and am wondering if anyone has an absolute favorite? I was leaning toward Carol Mackie, but if there is another one that does well in zone 6. I am also a beekeeper so I want one they will love too! Thanks!!!!

I've heard good things about Carol Mackie. I have D. odora 'Aureo-Marginata' and it gives me no end of grief with bugs, disease, and poor form (it tends to grow straight down into the dirt). But, oh how lovely when it is in bloom, the fragrance is intoxicating.

my love affair continues with the little ones; some kind of creep across the dirt but none grow straight down into it and I haven't had any pest or disease... yet
